About Our Client
The company is a well-established and highly successful global retailer with large presence across Europe. The organization is preparing to expand into the US market and is looking to make their first in-house legal appointment in the US wanting someone who specializes in retail leasing and real estate contract matters. This is an unusual in-house opportunity to join a global brand as they expand into the US market. This will be a career defining experience and an excellent role for professional development within a global organization.
Responsibilities
- Work directly with the new store opening and real estate team to review leases and provide specialist real estate legal advice
- As the first attorney hired in the US, work with the wider legal team overseas and the local business to provide wider legal support / supervise outside counsel (up to 20% of time, until the local legal team expands)
- Draft, review, and negotiate leases
- Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of contracts and agreements
- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements
- Manage relationships with external counsel as needed for specialized legal matters
- Work closely with the legal department overseas to ensure alignment and a consistent approach to legal strategy and risk management in the US
- Support corporate governance initiatives and other legal projects as required
Location & Requirements
Candidates must be based in Charlotte, North Carolina and able to work from the Charlotte office at least 4 days per week, and have US work authorization now and indefinitely. The client will consider applicants looking to relocate to Charlotte from elsewhere in the US – must have a U.S. state bar in good standing.
Must have a U.S. state bar admission in good standing and eligible to practice in the United States.
The Successful Applicant
The successful Legal Counsel, In-House Leasing Attorney should have demonstrable skills:
- A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Admission to the bar in at least one U.S. state (in good standing)
- Strong knowledge of leasing and real estate matters, preferably in the retail industry
- Proven ability to draft and negotiate leases, real estate and commercial contracts and agreements effectively
- Hands-on, versatile approach to partnering with the business and real estate retail expansion team
- Excellent communication skills and collaborative approach to working with internal teams and external counsel
- A proactive and detail-oriented approach to managing varied legal matters
- The desire to develop with this highly successful, rapidly growing international retailer
