We are looking for a full‑time Senior Physicist/Consultant to join our Reactor and Radiation Physics Team at the Birchwood office. The role involves carrying out independent nuclear safety and technical assessment of nuclear submarine propulsion plant, as well as supporting criticality and shielding safety case development for the civil nuclear sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess safety cases and design technical cases.
  • Provide formal independent nuclear safety and technical assessment of documents related to the physics aspects of nuclear propulsion, delivering formal letters to relevant safety and technical committees.
  • Perform assurance activities, including physics trials and testing.
  • Contribute to research projects in reactor physics and associated technologies.
  • Represent the company at safety and technical meetings with clients, plant authorities, designers, and safety case authors.
  • Apply personal skills and experience to other projects, including shielding and criticality assessments for clients in the civil nuclear industry.

Required Qualifications & Competencies

  • Criticality and radiation shielding assessment experience.
  • Reactor plant physics analysis and performance skills.
  • Independent nuclear safety assurance, including safety assessment of relevant safety cases and technical assessment of reactor designs.
  • Criticality safety analysis, radiation shielding, mathematical methods and modelling.
  • Expertise in criticality safety, reactor physics, or shielding analysis.
  • Experience with submarine reactor design and safety case, civil reactor design and safety case.
  • Knowledge of shielding and radiological safety case development and assessment.
  • Proficiency using physics analysis codes.
  • Understanding of the UK regulatory and assurance environment.
