Amentum is recruiting for a Principal Waste Management Specialist to join our Radioactive Waste Management Consultancy business. We are developing expertise in waste strategy, inventory and compliance for radioactive waste, spent nuclear fuels and nuclear materials. The role involves working with waste producers, waste management organisations and strategic authorities across the UK and internationally.

About the Opportunity

You will join a friendly, multi‑disciplinary group and provide technical expertise on projects for radioactive waste management organisations, waste producers and regulators, both in the UK and overseas. The role can be based at Harwell, Cumbria, Scrabster or Birchwood and other locations are considered. We support flexible working arrangements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead or provide significant input to disposability assurance activities for higher and lower activity waste, including development of disposal submissions (e.g. LLWR’s WCH or NWS’s LoC submissions) and review of disposal cases.
  • Assess compliance of packaging solutions with disposal criteria and specifications.
  • Conduct technical audits of nuclear facilities or processes.
  • Manage records, information, risks and uncertainties related to radioactive waste.
  • Perform technical assessments across topics such as waste package inventory, wasteform properties, container performance, accident performance, operational, transport and post‑closure safety.
  • Provide strategic input to company waste retrieval and decommissioning projects, including on‑site support.
  • Produce high‑quality technical reports and documentation.
  • Implement tools and procedures for robust data management.
  • Deliver projects related to safe and timely disposal of radioactive waste.
  • Produce and verify calculations, analyses and interpretations.
  • Lead client and stakeholder interactions.
  • Support business growth by identifying, bidding for and winning new work with existing and new clients.

Qualifications

  • Degree (or equivalent training and experience) in a mathematical, physical science or engineering discipline.
  • Significant experience in a comparable role with some of the technical topic areas described.
  • Ability to analyse complex data sets and models, distil safety features and communicate concisely with specialists and senior stakeholders.
  • Strong technical writing and reviewing skills.
  • Adaptability and ability to prioritise across multiple projects.
