Amentum is seeking a Technical Director – Ports and Maritime Engineering to support the delivery of critical infrastructure within the Defence sector. The role offers a flexible hybrid working model, combining office-based, remote, and occasional UK site work. You will provide strategic and technical leadership for our Ports and Maritime capability, shape technical direction, and contribute to the engineering strategy across civil, structural, geotechnical, seismic, and maritime disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Shape technical governance and assurance across projects, ensuring alignment with standards, client needs, and industry best practice.
  • Inform decision‑making at senior levels as a trusted advisor to clients and stakeholders, building strong relationships.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams through all lifecycle stages – from concept and feasibility to detailed design and construction support.
  • Coordinate scope, schedule, budget, and resources to deliver high‑quality outcomes.
  • Mentor engineers and emerging leaders, supporting their development and building capability across the team.
  • Promote a collaborative, inclusive, and high‑performing culture where people can grow together.

Requirements (Fundamental)

  • A Chartered Engineer (ICE or IStructE) with extensive strategic and technical leadership experience.
  • Significant experience in civil and structural design, applying British Standards, Eurocodes, and related standards across complex programmes.
  • Strong background in ports, maritime, or heavy civil engineering sectors, capable of leading solutions to high‑value, high‑risk challenges.
  • Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and commercial awareness skills.
  • Outstanding communication and stakeholder engagement abilities, including at senior levels.
  • Experience contributing to or driving technical delivery on major projects or programmes.
  • A proactive, collaborative approach with the capacity to manage changing priorities.
  • A strong commitment to health, safety, and quality, with a focus on continuous improvement and team development.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with maritime infrastructure guidance (PIANC, OCIMF) and structural dynamics in marine projects.
  • Experience in digital engineering and information management strategies in major project environments.
  • Advanced finite element analysis expertise (STAAD.Pro, SAP2000) and knowledge of geotechnical software (WALLAP, PLAXIS).
  • Experience with NEC3/4 ECC contracts, operating at a senior level within programme delivery.
