Turn aerodynamic concepts into test-ready solutions. We’re looking for an experienced Senior Model Design Engineer with a background in Formula 1 wind tunnel model development to provide technical leadership across the design and development of our wind tunnel models, taking aerodynamic surfaces from concept through to build-ready solutions for testing.
Working at the interface between Aerodynamics, Model Design and Manufacturing, you’ll tackle complex engineering challenges, develop robust and precise design solutions, and ensure our models meet the demands of a competitive F1 environment. This is an opportunity to apply your technical expertise to some of the most challenging aspects of wind tunnel model development, taking ownership of complex projects, influencing design approaches and helping improve the quality, accuracy and efficiency of aerodynamic testing. Your contribution will help us develop our car and pursue our ambition to challenge at the front of the grid.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership on complex, high-risk and cross-functional wind tunnel model projects, from aerodynamic surface development through to test-ready delivery.
- Develop and review advanced 3D CAD models and assemblies, considering loads, interfaces, mechanisms, materials, tolerances and manufacturability.
- Own complex design and non-conformance issues, leading investigations through to resolution and using findings to improve designs, methods and standards.
- Direct the development of multiple Model Part Generators, improving capability and technical consistency across the Model Design group.
- Interpret FIA Restricted Wind Tunnel Testing requirements, resolve complex configuration and compliance issues, and approve work within your area of competence.
- Drive improvements in model accuracy, structural integrity, repeatability and test readiness, identifying technical risks early and coordinating the expertise needed to resolve them.
- Lead technical investigations into design, structural or delivery issues, ensuring effective resolution and closure.
- Mentor colleagues, contribute to technical and resourcing decisions, and represent Model Design in cross-functional discussions.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Engineering degree or equivalent experience, with a proven track record of independently delivering complex technical work in Formula 1 wind tunnel model design and development.
- Advanced mechanical design and 3D CAD skills, ideally including CATIA.
- Strong knowledge of design for manufacture and assembly, materials, manufacturing processes and wind tunnel model build and testing.
- Experience assessing structural integrity, tolerances, interfaces and verification requirements, with the technical judgement to develop and approve robust design solutions.
- Experience directing parametric or generative design systems, including the development and ownership of Model Part Generators.
- Working knowledge of FIA Restricted Wind Tunnel Testing requirements, configuration management and design release processes.
- Strong problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to balance safety, quality, delivery, cost and risk in a fast-paced engineering environment.
At Aston Martin Aramco, you’ll work alongside talented aerodynamic and engineering specialists, solving complex design challenges that directly influence the quality and effectiveness of our wind tunnel development programme. Your technical expertise will help turn aerodynamic concepts into precise, test-ready solutions, contributing to the ongoing development of our car and our ambition to challenge at the front of the grid.
If you have the F1 model design experience and technical depth to make a difference, we’d like to hear from you.
