Responsibilities:
- Design and develop process for new polymers/plastics/paper/fiber materials and systems for the manufacture of food packaging.
- Conduct experiments and tests in a Pilot plant and laboratory, semiworks and manufacturing including extrusion, thermoforming, injection molding and other processing equipment.
- Develop/design and execute experiments in support of cost reductions, materials replacements, productivity improvements for the current and new products/businesses.
- Participate in the scale-up of laboratory findings to full production levels.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations related to food packaging.
- Document all phases of research and development.
- Travel to manufacturing sites and vendor locations as needed (less than 20% travel required).
Skills/Experience:
- A very thorough understanding of processing and converting equipment for plastics.
- Hands on working experience with extrusion, foams extrusion (preferred) reclaim process injection molding, thermoforming in either Lab or plant settings.
- Key knowledge of the fundamentals of polymers, fluid flow, heat transfer and phase transition properties to influence design of equipment, processing and finished goods requirements at the lab, pilot, and commercial scale.
- Thorough understanding of materials-process and product performance relationship.
- Excellent critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication and project management skills.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or MS degree in chemical/materials engineering.
- Ability to understand mechanical and electrical schematics/prints, controls technology in plastic and paper converting equipment.
- Preferred proficiency with CAD and statistical analysis software.
