Strategic Analytics | 6-9 Month Fixed-Term Contract

About the Role

Pacific Life Re's Strategic Analytics team is seeking a Biometric Research Scientist / Actuary to support research into mortality, morbidity, and disability risk. Working with large longitudinal datasets, you will apply statistical and machine learning techniques to understand the impact of medical, behavioural, demographic, and socio-economic risk factors. Your insights will help inform underwriting innovation, risk assessment, product development, and actuarial research across the business. This role offers an opportunity to work at the intersection of actuarial science, data science, biometrics, and insurance innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, validate, and analyse large longitudinal datasets from insurance, underwriting, claims, health, and related sources – in collaboration with Strategic Analytics team members.
  • Develop statistical and machine learning models to quantify mortality, morbidity, and disability risk.
  • Apply techniques such as survival analysis, experience investigations, predictive modelling, and risk factor analysis.
  • Generate insights that support underwriting, pricing, product development, and research initiatives.
  • Collaborate with actuaries, underwriters, medical specialists, and data scientists across the business.
  • Present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

About You

You will have:

  • A degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience analysing complex longitudinal datasets.
  • Strong statistical modelling and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Python, or R and SQL preferred.
  • Experience with machine learning and predictive modelling techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in life insurance, reinsurance, healthcare analytics, epidemiology, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of mortality, morbidity, disability, or survival modelling.
  • Actuarial qualifications (FIA or equivalent) or progression towards qualification.
  • Experience with cloud-based analytics platforms such as AWS or Azure.
