Job Description
The Role
The Global Chief Underwriting and Claims Officer, Protection is one of the global leaders of Pacific Life Re’s Protection line of business. In addition to having global responsibility for the performance of Underwriting and Claims teams, you will share responsibility for the overall leadership of Pacific Life Re’s global Protection business through your participation in the Global Protection Executive Committee (GPEC).
Pacific Life Re’s global Protection team is structured so that the VP, Underwriting and Claims (UW&C) in each of its markets report solid line to the market lead – MVP, Protection in each location. That person is responsible for day-to-day management of the VP, Protection, UW&C, [Location]. The successful candidate in this role, working closely with each of the UW&C VPs, will be responsible for ensuring that the individual market Underwriting and Claims teams are completing their duties to a high quality (in line with the company’s risk appetite) and that their decisions are balanced and positively impact long-term organisational goals. As part of this role, you will be expected to be a promoter of best practice decision making across the business.
You will be responsible for setting, in line with the company’s vision, the global vision for the Underwriting and Claims function and ensuring buy-in and alignment from the market pricing teams.
You will set and lead our Underwriting and Claims development, including in the areas of the use of technology, the delivery and upkeep of Ocean, and delivering on Underwriting and Claims digital research projects. In fulfilling this aspect of the role, you will be supported by the AVP, Global Underwriting & Claims Development, Protection.
You will also be expected to be the global lead for the company’s predictive underwriting / modelling initiatives. In performing this role, you'll work with both the Pacific Life Re Strategic Analytics team and UnderwriteMe with the aim of developing reinsurance propositions for clients using data gained from UnderwriteMe and other third-party sources.
As a leader of the company’s global Protection business, you will be expected to contribute to the development of the global protection strategy and work with the GPEC in implementing that strategy.
This role will be a part of the broader Pacific Life Re Leadership Team.
Key Responsibilities
To provide strong leadership for the global Underwriting and Claims function by ensuring the following across the Protection line of business:
- Set and communicate the Underwriting and Claims strategy and policies governing new business accepted and claims paid by the company.
- Ensure that a strong global underwriting and claims community is in place and technical oversight of internal and external underwriting and claims management is in place.
- Oversight of consistent governance and risk management practices.
- That decision making across the global function appropriately balances the needs of the company and commercial realities.
- That learning and development activity is appropriately prioritised.
- That the underwriting and claims teams are sufficiently focused on leveraging synergies across other technical teams within the protection line of business including Pricing, Medical Analytics and Strategic Analytics.
- That the global underwriting and claims response to key emerging risks and issues is appropriate and timely.
- A culture of continuous improvement exists across the global function.
- A culture of risk management is in place such that the global function exhibits strong risk culture and awareness with open/healthy challenge and a proactive approach to identifying, fixing and learning from control failures.
Through participation at the GPEC, develop, articulate (through the business planning process) and deliver on the global protection strategy of Pacific Life Re
To work with the Strategic Analytics team and UnderwriteMe CEO and Senior Leadership Team to develop strategies with regards to the future direction of Underwriting & Claims and technology solutions across our key Protection markets, and work with the various market MDs and their teams to implement these strategies.
In line with the global Pacific Life Re marketing and branding strategy, develop and grow Pacific Life Re brand, including being seen in the industry as the “executive face” of Pacific Life Re’s global Underwriting and Claims Protection team.
Qualifications & Expertise
- At least 10 years’ experience in life (re)insurance underwriting and / or claims with an understanding of the underwriting and product dynamics of several markets.
- Skilled influencer/communicator with demonstrable confidence, maturity and gravitas in a wide range of settings, including client meetings.
- Highly commercial and able to negotiate with skill in challenging situations whilst maintaining the integrity of working relationships.
- Demonstrable track record of effective leadership and people management, motivation and development.
- Proven track record in establishing and maintaining strong client relationships.
- Ability to set and deliver compelling strategies in a challenging business environment.
- Demonstrated ability to make high-quality and well-balanced decisions in the face of ambiguity.
- Strong, leadership, managerial and influencing skills and an ability to operate at all levels.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of risk frameworks and controls.
- Proven track record of delivering major strategic change programmes.
