POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the General Manager, this position is responsible for coordinating efforts to ensure a safe working environment and that standards, record-keeping, permits, and environmental concerns are maintained according to regulations. The individual in this position is the inspiration and catalyst in promoting safe behaviour and controlling/reducing unsafe acts. The Environmental, Health and Safety Coordinator is also responsible for mitigating and improving security-related risks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Ensure that new employees, including temporary employees, receive general orientation and location-specific task training.
  • Strong understanding of BC and Alberta OH&S regulations.
  • Strong understanding of lockout and confined space.
  • Ensure that Record Keeping and Documentation requirements are met.
  • Ensure that all accidents and injuries are properly investigated and that the written report accurately describes the circumstances surrounding the accident/injury.
  • Ensure safety and first aid supplies are in stock and available.
  • Hold safety and committee meetings on a monthly basis.
  • Ensure that regulatory agency required programs are readily available, maintained, reviewed, and updated on an annual basis.
  • Ensure that company-required programs or processes are maintained.
  • Complete monthly plant inspections and track written action items resulting from those inspections.
  • Inspect & test sprinkler systems and fire department connections.
  • Ensure storm water samples and tests are completed twice each year.
  • Complete a monthly safety report for the General Manager.
  • Complete the required testing and reporting for Air Quality and ensure compliance with Metro Vancouver.
  • Complete the required storm water testing and reporting for Provincial Water Quality Control Board.
  • Ensure compliance and permitting of air pressure tanks with BC & Alberta Safety Authority.
  • Attend safety meetings and abide by all safety rules set forth by the company and governmental regulatory agencies, ensuring that hazardous conditions are reported and corrected.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:

  • High school education or equivalent with Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Advanced courses/certificates in Environmental Management, Industrial Hygiene, Safety or Security is also a benefit.
  • 1 to 3 years’ experience in Environmental, Health and Safety in a production environment is an asset.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and mathematical skills.
  • Regular attendance is required.

  • Standing, walking, sitting, talking/listening, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms.
  • Lifting up to 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:

  • Work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, outdoor weather conditions, heat or cold (non-weather) conditions.
  • Very loud noise.

SALARY RANGE: 58-65k Annually. Basalite offers an excellent benefits and compensation package which includes medical, dental, vision, and pension.
