Department: Sustainable Energy Solutions
About Pacific Basin
We are looking for a commercially minded Bunker Manager to join our Sustainable Energy Solutions team in London. The role combines physical bunker procurement and operations with hands‑on involvement in energy risk management and carbon markets. You will work closely with Chartering and Operations to optimize bunkering decisions and contribute to the best overall voyage result.
Sustainable Energy Solutions brings together expertise across bunker procurement, energy risk management, sustainability, biofuels and low‑emission freight, with dedicated resources working together across these areas.
Key Responsibilities
Bunker Procurement & Operations
- Purchase conventional marine fuels and biofuels across Europe, the Middle East and the wider Atlantic region.
- Work closely with Chartering and Operations to determine the optimal bunkering strategy, considering overall voyage economics, including fuel cost, deviation, time, port costs, consumption, vessel schedules and operational risk.
- Negotiate prices and commercial terms with physical suppliers and bunker traders.
- Manage bunker stems from planning and enquiry through confirmation and delivery, coordinating with suppliers, vessels, Operations and port agents.
- Manage changes and urgent requirements, including out‑of‑hours operational issues when required.
Fuel Quality & Claims
- Follow up fuel analysis results and coordinate with vessels, Technical colleagues and suppliers on quality issues.
- Support the resolution of bunker quality and quantity claims and monitor supplier performance.
Energy Risk Management & EU ETS
- Execute bunker hedging transactions in the paper market in cooperation with the team's dedicated risk‑management resources.
- Actively manage EU ETS exposure through the purchase of EU Allowances (EUAs) and monitor the EUA market and requirements.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone who is commercially curious, analytical and hands‑on, with a practical, problem‑solving mindset and the ability to work across departments to find solutions to operational and commercial challenges.
Ideally, you will have:
- 2–5 years of relevant experience in bunker procurement, bunker trading, marine fuels or commercial/operational shipping.
- Good knowledge of the physical bunker market, ideally with exposure to Europe and/or the Middle East.
- Strong commercial judgement and negotiation skills, with existing supplier and trader relationships considered an advantage.
- A good understanding of vessel operations and the practical considerations affecting bunker planning.
- A genuine interest in oil, bunker and carbon markets, as well as sustainability and shipping decarbonisation.
- An understanding of marine fuel specifications and bunker quality considerations.
- The ability to make sound decisions in a fast‑moving environment and work effectively across different commercial and operational functions.
Experience with dry bulk shipping would be an advantage. A technical or seagoing background is not required but would be considered a benefit.
This is an opportunity to develop a broad commercial energy skillset within a global dry bulk owner and operator, combining physical bunker procurement, paper hedging and carbon markets, while gaining exposure to biofuels and the changing marine energy landscape.
