About us Digital Process acts as an internal delivery and enablement partner, working with teams across the business to understand their processes, shape opportunities, design solutions and deliver workflow, automation and orchestration capabilities. The team helps translate business strategy, operational challenges and process improvement opportunities into practical digital products. Ultimately, we aim to enable the business to grow profitably through scalable capabilities. Presently, the team are focused on implementation of workflow orchestration and automation capabilities to support a global digital transformation programme.

About you As Lead Automation Solutions Engineer in the Digital Process team, you will help design, build and embed digital process solutions that solve real business problems with a focus on Automation. You will work across the full lifecycle of a solution: understanding business challenges, shaping requirements, designing future-state processes, building, documenting and configuring solutions, integrating technologies, testing outputs, deploying solutions, supporting adoption and continually improving what has been delivered. We work with Appian as a core platform for workflow, case management and orchestration, but you will focus on helping identify and apply the right automation technology for the problem. This will include a variety of automation tools, systems integration, data processing, intelligent document processing, process intelligence, AI-enabled capabilities, RPA, cloud services, reporting, dashboards and other supporting technologies. The role requires a blend of engineering discipline, process thinking, business analysis, solution design and stakeholder collaboration. You will need to be comfortable moving between business conversations and technical implementation, helping ensure that solutions are not only well built, but also well understood, well adopted and capable of delivering measurable value.

Core Elements of the Role

  • Solution design and discovery: Work with business stakeholders, process owners, BAs, SMEs, other delivery teams and Digital Process colleagues to understand business problems, user needs, process pain points and improvement opportunities. Translate business requirements, process maps and conceptual designs into structured solution designs, user journeys, data models, backlog items and acceptance criteria. Work with technical & solutions architects to identify the appropriate solution pattern for each opportunity, including when to use core case management, workflow orchestration, automation, integration, analytics, AI, RPA or a combination of capabilities. Support early-stage opportunity shaping, proof-of-concept activity and feasibility assessment. Contribute to cost-benefit assessments, sizing, delivery planning and prioritisation.
  • Automation and orchestration delivery: Build, configure and support automation solutions using relevant technologies typically (but not exclusively) integrated into Appian workflows. Work with other engineers and other delivery teams to help design and implement automations & orchestration solutions integrated into core business processes (core workflows). Help develop integrations with other enterprise systems, data sources and automation components where needed. Help automate manual work through appropriate patterns such as data processing, document extraction, event-triggered automation, analytical automation, RPA, AI-enabled workflows or API-based integrations. Contribute to reusable solution components, accelerators, standards and patterns that make future delivery faster and more consistent.
  • Engineering quality and governance: Build solutions in line with secure software development lifecycle expectations, enterprise information security standards, governance requirements and engineering best practice. Contribute to technical documentation, solution designs, architecture decision records, test evidence, release documentation, runbooks and user guidance. Participate in peer reviews, design reviews, testing, defect triage and continuous improvement of engineering practices. Coach & support developers to help instil engineering excellence. Support regression testing, functional testing, performance testing and UAT readiness. Help ensure solutions are scalable, maintainable, secure, accessible and aligned with enterprise architecture and platform standards.
  • Adoption, support and continuous improvement: Work with business teams to prepare for adoption, including demos, walkthroughs, user training, hypercare and feedback loops. Support live applications through issue triage, enhancements, health checks, monitoring and ongoing improvement. Support teams using process mining data, user feedback and operational metrics to identify opportunities to improve workflows, reduce manual effort and strengthen controls. Help embed a “Measure, Manage, Optimise” approach by ensuring digital processes generate useful data and can evolve based on evidence. Collaborate across Digital Process, Technology, Enterprise Architecture, platform teams and business stakeholders to deliver joined-up outcomes.

Description Goal

  • Design & build automation and orchestration solutions 60%
  • Adoption, support, testing, documentation and continuous improvement 20%
  • Cross-training others in the team, capability development and broader upskilling to keep up to date 15%
  • Innovation, proof-of-concept work and emerging technology exploration 5%

Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong interest in workflow, automation, process improvement and digital product delivery.
  • Automation design and development experience is essential.
  • Ability to understand business processes and translate them into practical digital solutions.
  • Experience working across business and technical stakeholders, with the confidence to challenge, clarify and shape requirements.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to break complex processes into manageable components.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts in business terms.
  • A delivery mindset, with attention to quality, documentation, testing and operational readiness.
  • Experience with low-code, workflow, BPM, and case management desirable.
  • Appian awareness is beneficial, particularly in areas such as process modelling, SAIL interfaces, records, integrations, business rules and application design.
  • Broad and general experience with setting up and managing automation technologies and integration methods is more valuable than deep knowledge of individual tools.
  • Understanding of systems integration, data modelling, application design, testing, deployment and support.
  • Awareness of secure development practices, software development lifecycle approaches and governance controls.
  • Comfortable working in agile or iterative delivery environments.
  • Collaborative and proactive, with a desire to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Curious about new technologies, but pragmatic about matching technology choices to business problems and organisational capability.
  • Comfortable working in evolving and sometimes ambiguous environments.
  • Able to balance speed of delivery with quality, control, maintainability and user adoption.
  • Willing to learn new tools and cross-train across different solution patterns.
  • A focus on building solutions that users value and that the business can sustain.
