About us
The PA is a beacon of trust for news, content and data.
At the heart of our group is the Press Association, the UK and Ireland’s national news agency, trusted for its impartiality, accuracy and speed for more than 150 years. We bring these standards to everything we do, from news and sports data to content creation and communications.
The opportunity
We’re looking for a talented and enthusiastic Sports Reporter to join our editorial team, covering sporting news and events across London and the South of England.
This is an opportunity to be at the heart of the action, reporting on live sporting events, attending press conferences and delivering accurate, engaging journalism.
Working as part of our busy sports newsroom, you’ll cover a wide range of stories, develop valuable contacts across your patch and produce compelling written and video content for our round-the-clock newswire.
You’ll need strong news judgement, the ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure, and the flexibility to respond to the demands of a 24/7 news operation.
This is a varied and fast-paced role where no two days are the same, offering the opportunity to contribute to sports coverage trusted by media organisations across the UK, Ireland and beyond.
The minimum salary for the job level in which this role sits is £33,000, and the job family is Reporter. We are happy to discuss this detail more during the recruitment stage should you have any questions.
What you'll do
- Report on live sporting events, press conferences and breaking sports news across London and the South.
- Produce accurate, engaging and timely copy that meets The PA's editorial standards and deadlines.
- Shoot high-quality video content to support our sports coverage.
- Build and maintain a strong network of contacts, identifying stories and developing opportunities for original reporting.
- Work closely with colleagues across the sports desk to deliver comprehensive, reliable coverage.
- Use audience and performance data to help inform and tailor your reporting.
- Contribute to our 365-day sports coverage, working flexibly as part of a newsroom rota.
What you'll bring
- A recognised journalism qualification and/or relevant experience working in journalism.
- Strong news judgement and the ability to identify, develop and deliver compelling sports stories.
- Excellent writing skills, with a commitment to accuracy, impartiality and delivering clean copy to tight deadlines.
- An enthusiasm for sport and an understanding of the sporting landscape.
- The confidence to build relationships, develop contacts and gather stories independently.
- The ability to shoot high-quality video content, or the willingness to develop these skills.
- A collaborative approach and the ability to thrive in a busy, fast-moving newsroom.
- Flexibility to work as part of a rota covering sporting events throughout the year, including weekends and public holidays.
Above all, we're looking for someone who is curious, proactive and passionate about sports journalism, with the drive to find stories and the judgement to tell them well.
What we offer
- 25 days' holiday plus public holidays, with a holiday purchase scheme.
- A yearly Wellbeing Day and eight hours of paid volunteering time.
- Pension, life assurance, Wellhub access, learning opportunities and a Bupa Health Cash Plan through salary sacrifice.
- The opportunity to work alongside experienced journalists at one of the UK's most trusted news organisations.
