Established in 2003, PB Safety works with clients, consultants and project teams to help deliver safer, better-managed construction projects. The business is APS registered, SafeContractor approved and OSHCR registered, with a highly qualified team offering CDM, Principal Designer, Client support and wider health and safety consultancy services.
Due to continued growth, PB Safety is now looking to recruit a Principal Designer under the Building Safety Act to join its specialist team.
The Role
This is a full-time hybrid role based in Bedford, with flexibility to work some days from home. The successful candidate will support clients and design teams through the design phase of construction projects, helping to manage compliance, identify design risks and support safer project outcomes under the Building Safety Act and Building Regulations. You will work closely with clients, consultants, contractors and other dutyholders, helping to coordinate design compliance, support project teams and provide clear, practical guidance throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Support Principal Designer duties under the Building Regulations and Building Safety Act.
- Attend design team meetings, workshops and project reviews.
- Prepare Building Safety Act / Building Regulations progress reports at key project stages.
- Support RIBA stage reviews and Gateway submissions.
- Liaise with clients, consultants, contractors and other dutyholders.
- Help coordinate the route to compliance with the wider project team.
- Review design development and identify risks to compliance.
- Support design risk management and change management during the design phase.
- Advise clients on their duties under the Building Safety Act.
- Help ensure cooperation and communication between project dutyholders.
- Support mandatory reporting arrangements and project documentation.
- Assist with Fire and Emergency File information during the design phase.
- Monitor design team competence and support good project governance.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a technically minded construction professional who enjoys compliance, coordination, design review and working closely with multidisciplinary project teams. You may come from a background in:
- Architecture
- Architectural Technology
- Construction Management
- Design Management
- Building Control
- CDM / Health & Safety Consultancy
- Engineering or another relevant construction discipline
Skills and Experience Required
- Around 4+ years’ relevant experience within construction, design, CDM, building safety or health and safety consultancy.
- Good understanding of the Building Safety Act, Building Regulations and statutory construction processes.
- Experience or awareness of Principal Designer duties under the Building Regulations.
- Understanding of design risk management and construction-phase planning.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Confidence working with clients, consultants, contractors and multidisciplinary teams.
- Organised, process-led and comfortable managing work across multiple projects.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a hybrid environment.
- Professional membership such as IOSH, APS, CIOB, RIBA, CIAT or similar would be beneficial.
- A relevant degree or equivalent industry experience would be preferred.
