Are you an experienced finance professional looking for a varied role where you can take responsibility for a broad range of accounting responsibilities?

Our client is looking for an Assistant Accountant to join their finance team, supporting the day to day running of the accounts function while playing an important role in month end reporting, financial control, forecasting and compliance.

This varied position is an excellent opportunity for a part-qualified or qualified by experience accountant to develop your technical skills across management accounts, VAT compliance and financial reporting in a supportive environment.

This is an office based role, working Monday to Thursday 8am to 5pm with a 3.30pm finish every Friday!

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing monthly management accounts and providing meaningful analysis to budget holders and cost centre owners
  • Supporting the month end close, including journals, accruals, prepayments, intercompany charges, rebates, and lease accounting
  • Completing monthly balance sheet reconciliations, investigating discrepancies, and following through on outstanding items
  • Preparing and maintaining weekly cashflow forecasts
  • Managing the fixed asset register, including additions and monthly reconciliations
  • Preparing VAT returns and Intrastat submissions, ensuring all relevant deadlines are met
  • Supporting excise duty and other tax compliance requirements, including Plastic Packaging Tax
  • Maintaining sales rebate provisions and ensuring these remain accurate
  • Supporting the preparation of budgets and forecasts alongside departmental budget holders
  • Assisting with the year end audit and annual stocktake
  • Responding to ONS reporting requirements
  • Identifying opportunities to improve accounting processes and make day to day activities more efficient
  • Providing wider support to the finance team as required
  • Who They're Looking For
  • AAT qualified, with part qualified or qualified ACCA or CIMA considered
  • Proven experience working in a busy Finance Team environment
  • Good knowledge of accounting and financial principles and practices
  • Demonstrable experience preparing management accounts, budgets and forecasts
  • Good working knowledge of VAT and VAT return preparation
  • Working knowledge of ERP software (experience with Syspro ERP is desirable)
  • Strong Excel skills with ability to analyse and manipulate data
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications
  • Good organisational skills with attention to detail
  • A proactive and curious mindset, with a genuine interest in developing your knowledge and experience
