One of our Essex clients is looking for an Environmental Health Officer / Environmental Health Technical Officer to join their Environmental Protection service on an initial 3‑month temporary contract. This role offers the opportunity to undertake a broad range of pollution and public health duties, working within a defined geographical area of the district while supporting colleagues on more complex cases as required.

The Role

  • Deliver a full programme of complaints‑driven Environmental Health work, with a strong emphasis on investigation, compliance, and enforcement.
  • Contribute to wider public health initiatives and respond to planning and licensing consultations.

Key areas of work include:

  • Statutory nuisance investigations and enforcement
  • Filthy and verminous premises
  • Pest infestations, waste accumulation and hoarding cases
  • Serving notices where appropriate and securing regulatory compliance
  • Responding to planning and licensing consultations
  • Supporting public health initiatives led by the Council
  • Working collaboratively within a team and covering cases during colleague absence
  • Occasional work outside normal office hours when required

Principal Accountabilities

  • Investigate complaints and service requests within your assigned function and area
  • Record and act on matters of environmental significance to ensure compliance
  • Apply and promote corporate quality, health & safety, safeguarding, and equal opportunities policies
  • Attend and advise Area Committees when required
  • Support service resilience, including during civil emergencies
  • Escalate concerns to the Environmental Health Manager where duties cannot be fulfilled

The Experience You Will Bring

  • Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health (desirable)
  • Registration with the EHRB (desirable)
  • Proven experience of statutory nuisance investigations
  • Experience dealing with filthy and verminous premises, pest-related issues, and hoarding
  • Understanding of regulatory enforcement tools and compliance approaches
  • Experience responding to planning and licensing consultations
  • Knowledge of drainage investigations and enforcement, including rural settings
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative team‑focused approach
