About the opportunity
Oxygen 8 Recruitment is working with a respected medical communications organisation to appoint a new business development leader, a pivotal, revenue-generating hire as the business moves into its next phase of growth. This is a London-based role with hybrid flexibility. The title and level (Senior Manager through to Director) will flex with the experience and network you bring; we'd rather shape the role around an exceptional candidate than force a strong one into a fixed box. You'll be joining a business with real scientific credibility and an established delivery capability, where business development is treated as a strategic function rather than an afterthought. You'll have the autonomy to run your market, the backing of strong delivery and scientific teams behind your pitches, and a clear line of sight between the deals you win and the growth of the organisation.
The role
- Drive new business across pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device clients, identifying and converting opportunities that align with the organisation's strengths and growth ambitions.
- Own the full sales cycle end to end from first conversation and needs analysis, through proposal and pitch, to negotiation and close.
- Build and manage a healthy, qualified pipeline, with accurate forecasting and disciplined CRM hygiene that gives leadership a clear view of what's coming.
- Develop account growth strategies that turn first wins into long-term, repeatable relationships rather than one-off projects.
- Represent the business credibly at industry level, conferences, events and professional networks raising its profile and generating inbound interest in-market.
- Work closely with delivery, medical and scientific teams to shape compelling, commercially sound and genuinely deliverable proposals.
- Feed market intelligence client needs, competitor activity, pricing trends — back into the leadership team to sharpen positioning and service development.
About you
We'd love to hear from you if you have:
- A demonstrable track record of winning and growing business within medical communications, medical education, or a closely related healthcare agency environment.
- A consultative, insight-led sales style — someone who can hold credible, substantive conversations with senior, scientifically literate clients and earn their trust.
- An established network across pharma, biotech and medical device, or a proven ability to build one quickly from a standing start.
- Confidence owning a number — self-directed, target-oriented and comfortable carrying and exceeding a quota.
- Strong commercial judgement: the instinct to know which opportunities to chase, which to qualify out, and how to price and position to win.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, and the resilience and drive that long-cycle, high-value selling demands.
What's on offer
