Overview of the Post:

HMP Elmley is a Category B / C men’s prison located in Isle of Sheppey, Kent. HMP Swaleside is a Category B men’s prison located in Isle of Sheppey, Kent.

The post holder will work across the two prisons with other multi-disciplinary professionals to develop and revise the therapeutic programme and activity plans as necessary to meet the needs of different offender groups.

Main duties of the job

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Provide one to one/group interventions and therapeutic programmes in the Inpatient Department.
  • In-call activity as required.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of holistic care plans.
  • Participate in the service-wide health promotion, education programme, and activities.
  • Support pre-release and continuing care plans.
  • Manage a clinical caseload.
  • Support the development of evidence-based OT practice.
  • Participate in research/audit activities.
  • Supervise the work of junior staff and students.
  • Contribute to and carry out risk assessment and management plans.
  • Provide specialist OT advice.
  • Work independently without direct supervision.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Exercise good personal time management, punctuality, and consistent reliable attendance.
  • Provide effective support, guidance, supervision, and appraisal of junior staff.
  • Contribute to the induction, training, and education of students and other staff in clinical areas.
  • Be responsible for the supervision and written assessment of OT students on fieldwork placement.
  • Ensure relevant national and local policies are implemented.
  • Review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of professional and operational supervision and appraisal.

Clinical:

  • Manage a caseload of offenders with complex mental health needs.
  • Work with service users to identify OT goals as part of the multi-disciplinary care plan.
  • Provide the most effective assessment and interventions in various settings.
  • Plan and implement offender-led individual and/or group interventions.
  • Consider offenders\’ health, social, cultural, and spiritual needs.
  • Assess for and provide equipment to enhance independence in daily living skills.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and modify treatment to measure progress and identify outcomes.
  • Plan and deliver services within the Care Programme Approach framework.
  • Apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice on life skills.
  • Assess the occupational needs of offenders and establish and evaluate appropriate treatment interventions.
  • Identify appropriate and inappropriate referrals and prioritise workload.
  • Manage effective discharge ensuring service users and all relevant agencies receive relevant information.
  • Contribute to and carry out risk assessment and risk management plans.
  • Work as part of the MDT and attend all relevant clinical meetings.
  • Maintain up-to-date electronic and written records in accordance with Professional and Trust standards.

Research:

  • Critically evaluate current research and apply it to practice.
  • Broaden research and development skills through participation in local audit and research projects.

Communication:

  • Communicate appropriately with offenders, carers, team members, OT colleagues, and other agencies.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills with those who have difficulty with communication.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

  • Diploma/degree in OT
  • UK HCPC Registration
  • CPPD portfolio containing evidence of active involvement of CPPD activities.
  • Interest in undertaking further relevant studies/training courses

Experience

  • Extensive experience as an OT including mental health experience
  • Applying and interpreting standardised OT assessments
  • Extensive clinical experience including individual and group work.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Post-registration experience in a relevant clinical setting
  • Advice & support of junior staff and/or students

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

  • Ability to establish rapport with difficult to engage offenders/carers.
  • Effective written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills
  • Presentation and training skills
  • Knowledge of standardised assessments

Effort and Environment

  • Ability to engage in physical activity groups and community visits.
  • Ability to meet the demands of a client group with complex needs.
