- Job Overview
- The Deputy Clinical Director for Surgery will be accountable to the Clinical Director for the performance of the directorate.
This is a key operational role within the Directorate and the post holder will work with the Clinical Director to lead and be accountable for ensuring services are patient focused and effective and for achieving national and local key performance indicators and standards.
- The post holder will provide visible leadership to all staff within the directorate and support the Clinical Director in delivering the strategic plan for the Division.
- The post holder will also work with the Divisional Director and the Divisional Management Team to ensure the services within the Clinical Directorate meet the required objectives.
- The Deputy Clinical Director will lead a Directorate triumvirate and directly line manage the Directorate Manager (DM) and Directorate Matron supported by the Clinical Director.
This team will deliver on the Directorate priorities in conjunction with respective Service Leads, nursing, administration and Allied Health Professional colleagues.
- This post is a deputy Clinical Director for the whole Surgery Directorate however it is anticipated that there will be a specific focus on aligning and integrating Gynaecology services into the Surgery directorate in the first year.
Main Duties
Managing the workforce within the Clinical Directorate, including responsibility for all senior and junior doctors to ensure the operational effectiveness of clinical services.
- Service delivery and quality standards set out in National Guidance and local contracts.
- By triangulating complex data, facts and situations, conduct capacity management, including delivery against target length of stay and patient throughput, and effective utilisation of facilities.
- Delivery of contract activities and patient access standards; including waiting times, hours Emergency department wait and Cancer standards.
- Financial performance targets delivering the required income and expenditure plan and identifying and delivering the cost improvement plan and deliver the EBITDA target.
- Ensuring governance is embedded within the services and all staff understand their responsibility for service quality and patient safety and that mechanisms are in place to monitor patient safety and measure clinical outcomes.
- Delivering messages that may be highly complex, contentious and difficult to deliver to people where there may be barriers to understanding.
- Ensuring the facilities (beds, theatres, outpatients and diagnostic assets) are used flexibly to enable contract activity to be delivered within the resource plan.
- Manage the services to meet the CQC domains of Safety, Caring, Responsiveness, Effectiveness and Well led.
