Overview

A Locum Specialty Doctor post in Anaesthesia is available now at Oxford University Hospitals, based jointly with the Horton Hospital and Oxford hospitals.

The Horton General Hospital in Banbury serves the growing population in the north of Oxfordshire and surrounding areas.

It has both inpatient and day case beds and also provides outpatient clinics, and is an acute general hospital providing a wide range of services.

The postholder will provide elective and emergency anaesthesia to adults and children, be part of the hospital cardiac arrest team, and receive tailored training and professional development.

Principal Responsibilities

The postholder will participate in the resident anaesthetic junior on‑call rota and be responsible for providing elective and emergency anaesthesia for the listed surgical specialties.

The postholder will also provide emergency airway support, be involved in the initial resuscitation and transfer of critically ill patients, and perform duties appropriate to the grade and experience.

The rota will include normal days, long days and nights.

  • General Surgery (including paediatrics, breast and colorectal)
  • Gynaecology
  • Urology
  • Trauma
  • Oral Surgery
  • Paediatric Dental Surgery
  • Cataract and minor Eye Surgery
  • Plastic Surgery (including paediatrics)
  • Obstetrics or other specialty interest (by arrangement, in Oxford)
  • Trauma list each weekday afternoon.
  • Liberal Day Surgery policy.
  • Critical Care Provision

Patients on the Oak high‑dependency / enhanced care unit are managed by admitting physicians with anaesthetic input as required.

High‑dependency patients may be discussed with the consultant on AICU at the John Radcliffe Hospital, and escalation to level three care is supported with the expectation of same‑day transfer to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Paediatric intensive‑care facilities are sited at the John Radcliffe Hospital and there is a retrieval service.
