Specialist Cancer Pharmacist

In the OUH Cancer Pharmacy team, we are passionate about investing in our people. As such we have developed a role suitable for a candidate who is at the beginning of their clinical pharmacy journey, but who is enthusiastic about developing their career within cancer and palliative care. This role is designed to give the successful applicant an opportunity to work within the foundation pharmacist framework in a specialist area, by supporting you through obtaining your post graduate clinical diploma and developing your skills and knowledge, in order to achieve the desired level of expertise to carry out the band 7 role effectively. The post graduate clinical diploma will be fully funded by OUH (subject to a mutual learning contract), and appropriate study leave allocated. The successful applicant will be appointed at a band 6 level, and will need to achieve set objectives. On completion of meeting these objectives, the post holder will be uplifted to a band 7 level.

Main duties of the job include:

• Delivery of high quality pharmaceutical care to adult cancer in-patients, day-case, and out-patients across two sites – Churchill Hospital and Horton General Hospital.
• Participation in pharmacy services to the Day Treatment Unit to optimise patients’ medication and reduce medicines wastage.
• Clinical checking of systemic anticancer treatment (SACT) and SACT clinical trial prescriptions.
• Participation in multidisciplinary ward rounds.
• Pharmacist led oral anti-cancer treatment education clinics.
• Pharmacist non-medical prescribing in multidisciplinary clinics and day treatment unit.
• Aseptics experience within Pharmacy’s Clinical Trials Aseptic Services Unit (CTASU).
• Participating in the day to day running of the CTASU and developing knowledge in quality control and quality assurance.
• Involvement in cancer phase I, II, and III clinical trials.
• Active participation in Thames Valley Cancer Alliance groups.

Person specification:

• Qualified to a degree level (4 year MPharm or equivalent) and Pharmacist registration with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
• Diploma / MSc in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent experience.
• Experience of working as a clinical pharmacist.
• Problem identification and solving skills.
• Well organised.
• Good Time Management.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to prioritise and manage time effectively.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team.
• Sensitivity and tolerance.

• Understands national priorities in cancer care.
• Demonstrable awareness of current cancer issues such as administration of intrathecal chemotherapy and the Manual of Cancer Quality Measures.
• Membership of British Oncology Pharmacy Association (BOPA).
• Experience of preparing budgetary reports for clinical areas.
• Demonstrable awareness of financial pressures.
• Accredited tutor for Cardiff University Clinical Pharmacy Diploma.
• Involvement in a pharmacist led outpatient clinic.
• Experience of practice research.
• Publication / conference presentations.
• Accredited Non-medical prescriber.
• Involvement in developing a service.
• Experience of developing drug protocols /contributing to formulary development.
