Clinical Fellow in Spinal Surgery

This advert is for 2 Clinical Fellow posts; the first post is to run from 1st August 2025 for 12 months until the end of July 2026. The second post is to run from 1st August 2025 for 6 months until the end of January 2026. Applications are invited from outstanding surgical candidates with FRCS(Orth) or equivalent for the post of Clinical Fellow, The Spinal Service, Oxford University Hospitals NHSFT, Oxford. This post is suitable for surgeons who have completed their specialist registrar training (post CCT is desirable) and are seeking experience in spinal surgery prior to obtaining a consultant appointment and are available from August 2025.

The Fellowship will rotate between 2 pairs of clinical teams, with training preferences discussed at interview. The full range of spinal surgical experience is available, including early onset scoliosis, adult deformity, all acute spinal presentations, degenerative spinal pathologies including MIS, spinal sarcoma, and metastatic disease. Training and service delivery will occur across the three main OUH hospital sites. We expect successful candidates to have their own surgical loupes (recommended 3x magnification with extended field) when they start in post. Training with the microscope will also be available.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this post is to enable the successful candidate to gain fellow-level experience in spinal surgery, while providing senior support to the professional team in outpatient clinics, operating lists, and ward work. Over a period of one year, the candidate is expected to gain experience in routine and complex surgery, including trauma and elective practice. The candidate will also be expected to engage in management and audit responsibilities of the team.

• Professional Registration: Full GMC Registration, Full Driving License
• Qualifications/Training: Completion of specialist training in Orthopaedics with certification FRCS, Previous spinal experience or fellowship
• Experience: Completion of specialist training in Orthopaedics with certification, Spinal experience, Interest in research with publications, Logbook showing spinal experience, Complex spinal surgery experience
• Skills and Knowledge: Sufficient leadership, organisational, communication, professional, and personal skills to undertake the role of spinal fellow in a large teaching hospital, Good personal and interpersonal skills, Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees, Experience of routine clinical audit, Management training and experience, Evidence of previous audit activity
