About OSP: OSP is a prestigious summer school designed for high-achieving students aged 14–18 years from around the world. Our mission is to provide an intellectually stimulating academic experience that fosters personal growth, critical thinking, and lifelong skills.
Total Hours: Approximately 19.25 teaching hours (morning lectures + afternoon workshops) are delivered over the 7 teaching days within each 12-day programme. As the role covers two programmes, this amounts to a total of roughly 38.5 teaching hours for the summer. In addition, tutors will receive paid training at £25 per hour, typically 2–3 hours in total, with exact training hours confirmed closer to the programme start date.
Teaching Schedule: Teaching typically follows the below format:
- Deliver the drone technology strand, leading students through a structured series of lectures and practical sessions.
- Teach the core principles behind drone design, components, and flight dynamics.
- Run hands-on workshops on motors, ESCs, propellers, batteries, flight controllers, and GPS modules.
- Guide students step-by-step as they assemble a drone from scratch.
- Lead configuration and testing sessions, supervise safe flight practice, and introduce basic automation and path-planning concepts.
A valid Fly er ID is required for this position and must be provided prior to the start of the programme. You will be provided with a full module handbook and approximately 80% of the course content, with 20% left flexible for you to adapt based on your expertise and teaching style.
Note: This role focuses entirely on the drone/UAV component of the module — the general engineering content (such as materials science, CAD, and biomedical engineering) is delivered by a separate tutor.
Deliver a structured 12-day programme (across two cohorts):
- Teach the drone technology strand during each 12-day programme, delivering clear and engaging 45-minute morning lectures to classes of approximately 30–35 students.
- Lecture topics include drone components and architecture (motors, ESCs, propellers, batteries), flight dynamics, aerodynamics, control systems, GPS modules, firmware/flight controller principles, and real-world UAV applications.
Lead hands-on engineering workshops:
- Facilitate 2-hour practical workshops each afternoon focused on applied drone-building and testing.
- Workshop activities include assembling drones from component parts, soldering and wiring tasks, installing and configuring flight controller firmware (e.g., Betaflight), calibrating sensors, running bench tests, and preparing for supervised flight practice.
- Guide students step-by-step, oversee safe tool use, troubleshoot technical issues, and provide personalised feedback.
- Team Advisors (TAs) will support you, and you will be responsible for training and instructing them.
Administrative Duties:
- Review equipment and material needs for classes.
- Foster a positive learning environment: Build a warm, inclusive classroom where students feel confident, motivated, and encouraged to share ideas and learn collaboratively.
- Promote university-style teaching and independent learning: Lead sessions that reflect undergraduate academic practices, helping students experience authentic university-level study while strengthening their critical thinking and research abilities.
- Complete required training: Engage with our induction to learn our logistical requirements, company procedures, and safeguarding responsibilities.
- Provide training to the Team Advisors (TAs): Provide guidance to TAs so they can effectively assist in workshops, manage student groups, and help facilitate hands-on tasks.
- Ensure they understand the engineering concepts and activities planned for each day.
- Prioritise student wellbeing: Remain vigilant to any welfare or safeguarding issues, raising concerns promptly to ensure students’ safety.
Person Specification:
- Subject Expertise: Strong academic background in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g., Aerospace, Robotics, Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronics).
- Confident teaching core UAV concepts including drone components, flight dynamics, control systems, and hands-on assembly.
- Inspirational Teacher: Passion for motivating students and developing their understanding, using interactive, discussion-based learning.
- Strong Communication: Exceptional ability to break down technical engineering concepts into accessible, engaging explanations suitable for mixed-ability groups.
- Adaptability: Skilled at adjusting teaching strategies to suit varied learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and differing levels of prior STEM knowledge.
- Organisational Skills: Able to manage lesson planning, equipment preparation, workshop setup, and administrative responsibilities across a busy 12-day programme.
- Team Collaboration: Willing to work closely with Teaching Advisors (TAs) and the Academic Lead to ensure smooth delivery of all sessions.
- Prior teaching experience (in Engineering or closely related field), preferably in tutorial settings at Oxford or a similar institution.
- Proven expertise in designing and delivering academic content for young learners.
- Ability to teach a wide range of topics within the subject area.
- Current PhD candidate or above at Oxford.
- Experience teaching non-native students.
- Relevant experience of residential summer schools or summer camps.
- Relevant experience of teaching 14-18 year old students.
Additional Requirements:
- Paid Compulsory Training: Successful candidates must attend mandatory online and in-person training sessions prior to the start of the programme. These sessions are essential to ensure familiarity with OSP and NSLC’s curriculum, policies, and teaching methodologies.
