Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing. Using our world-leading trapped-ion technology, we’re building the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum systems to tackle problems that today’s supercomputers cannot solve. Joining Oxford Ionics means becoming part of a global IonQ team that is transforming the future of quantum technology - faster, at scale, and with real world impact.
We are seeking a Senior Staff Analogue Designer to lead the development of key analogue electronics for our Quantum Processor Units (QPUs), the technology which sits at the very heart of our quantum computers. This role is pivotal in shaping the analogue circuitry that powers our trapped‑ion quantum systems and is an opportunity to work with new and novel technology, to help shape the future of quantum computing.
In this hands‑on position, you will collaborate closely with scientists and engineers to design, validate, and implement high‑performance analogue circuits tailored for quantum computing applications. You will be involved in all aspects of the analogue design process, from concept through to production readiness, while also mentoring junior team members and contributing to the growth of the analogue design team more broadly.
What you’ll be responsible for:
- Analogue circuit design: Design and develop complex analogue circuits including amplifiers, filters, ADCs/DACs and mixed‑signal interfaces that meet the stringent requirements of quantum systems.
- Validation and testing: Create and execute comprehensive testing and validation plans to ensure the circuits function to specification while maintaining high reliability.
- Collaboration: Work closely with multi‑disciplinary teams (digital design, layout, packaging, systems) to ensure that analogue circuit designs are effectively integrated within the overall system context.
- Mentorship: Guide and mentor junior engineers while fostering an innovative and effective design environment.
What you’ll need:
- We’re looking for a highly experienced analogue designer with a track record of delivering high‑performance designs in fast‑paced, technically demanding environments.
- You should have a strong grasp of analogue circuit principles, design techniques, and methodologies, along with the ability to communicate complex concepts effectively.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related field, with extensive experience (typically 8+ years) in analogue circuit design.
- Proven expertise in the design of precision analogue circuits for high reliability and performance applications.
- A solid understanding of semiconductor devices and their applications in analogue circuits.
- Hands‑on experience with relevant CAD tools and test equipment used for circuit design and validation.
- Ability to work in a cross‑functional capacity, collaborating effectively across teams.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for innovation in analogue electronics and be motivated by the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking quantum technologies. Your ability to collaborate with diverse teams and lead complex projects will be critical to our success. No prior quantum computing experience is necessary.
