Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing. Using our world-leading trapped-ion technology, we are building the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum systems to tackle problems that today’s supercomputers cannot solve.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Optics Technician to join our growing Quantum Infrastructure team and facilitate the company’s ongoing growth and future expansion plans. This is a senior role within a highly experienced department. In this dynamic role, you will collaborate with our existing technical staff on cutting-edge quantum computing systems. You will also support engineers and scientists on system builds, maintenance, upgrades, and research projects.
As a Senior Optics Technician, you will work alongside other technicians and scientists to build and commission the optics and laser aspects of our state of the art quantum systems. Responsibilities may also include managing stock control, handling purchasing and supplier relations, producing technical documentation, and maintaining a tidy and safe lab and workshop environment.
Requirements
- The ideal candidate will be able to take responsibility for tasks with minimal supervision and possess experience in several of the following areas: lasers, optics and fibre-optics, electrical wiring, working from mechanical and electrical drawings, microscope use, and/or fine part handling.
- Additionally, formal qualifications such as an Advanced/Modern Apprenticeship (Level 3) in Engineering or an HNC (Level 4) in Engineering, or other similar qualifications would be beneficial.
- Specific experience working in a scientific support role or in a commercial research environment would also be advantageous.
Essential:
- Relevant industrial operations experience (approx. 3 years).
- Experience working in a laboratory environment requiring the handling of lasers and optics and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to assemble electronic subsystems, including fault finding (e.g. continuity testing).
- Experience of the assembly of high precision and/or delicate parts, optics handling and the use of lasers.
- Some experience of testing high-technology equipment prior to shipping.
Desirable:
- Experience of optical alignment using laser systems.
- Laser safety training to Class 4 laser use.
- Previous experience of assembling and testing scientific instrumentation.
- Strong IT skills.
