Senior Mechanical Engineer
Date: 16 Jul 2025
Location:
Oxford, GB
Job Function: Technical
Business Unit: NanoScience
Engineering, science, and technology… They’re united by the joy of exploration, the intricacies of innovation, and the resilience and perseverance needed to bring great products and ideas to life.
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you’ve got that bug for problem-solving, sure, but engineering, to you, isn’t just about fixing and resolving – it’s a mindset; it’s a journey. From a product’ design concept through to completion, you thrive on second-guessing difficulties and orchestrating efficiencies.
At Oxford Instruments Nanoscience, you’ll be stepping into this role representing an established brand and a premium provider of high-value, high-complex products that are enabling cutting-edge research and spearheading the game-changing breakthroughs of tomorrow.
From cryogenic instrumentation to quantum computing, our business is a home for those who love to learn and will relish the challenge of new products always pushing the limits of engineering capability and technical possibility.
Do you offer…?
- Four or more years’ experience leading mechanical engineering product designs from concept to completion
- Experiencing designing an entire system/product – not just individual components
- DFMEA, DFM, DFA, DFS experience
- VoC and H&S focused design approach
As a member of our NPI team, you’ll be a go-to authority for signoffs and a spearhead for new system-level and platform-level development in line with the business’s product roadmap.
You’ll be managing full product lifecycles, typically involving pressured vessel and vacuum devices. Interacting with cryogenics and system engineers, you’ll steer the journey through concept design, modelling, design for manufacture, testing, production, installation, and service.
Going forward, you’ll be empowered to challenge existing mechanical principles and practices as well as putting configuration definition and standard interface definition into place – as we evolve to the management of all designs in a modular format.
Why Oxford Instruments?
You’ll be joining a team of big names and big brains; Oxford Instruments is packed with scientific experts and PhD-qualified professionals. There are no egos, just a shared passion for collective growth. You learn something new every day. If you love science and physics, you’ll feel like a kid in a sweet shop.
An established brand and a premium provider in its field, Oxford Instruments is renowned for its high-quality product performance. Our customers praise our service. Our staff are proud of what they can achieve and what’s in store for the future. Our team is packed with long service awards.
Based on-site and with minimal travelling necessary in this role, you’ll be working in a modern office located in picturesque woodland. This engineering site is no metallic maze or fusty factory; instead, picture tall trees, fresh air, falling pinecones, bluebell walks, and group runs. This really is work; it’s not Center Parcs, honest!
There’s more…
- Benefits inclusive of 25 days’ annual leave with bank holidays on top, private medical insurance, group pension plan, and much more
- A structured career ladder and progression support; good potential to progress to Principal level
- Full training on our design software and all our products
- A loyal, happy, and stable workforce, with long service awards aplenty
- A fun, enjoyable place to work, with team bonding events, refreshments, and games
- A team of highly knowledgeable people happy to share the details of exciting, innovative products
