Materials Analysis is an Oxford Instruments Business Unit that manages our ELECTRON MICROSCOPE, MECHANICAL MICROSCOPE, ATOMIC FORCE MICROSCOPE, RAMAN MICROSCOPE and BENCHTOP NMR PRODUCTS. It is part of the wider Oxford Instruments Group that also includes Andor Technology, NanoScience, Plasma Technology and X‑Ray Technology. With a 60‑year history and fourteen Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, its world‑class products and technologies help customers address the greatest challenges of the 21st century.
We are looking for a Principal Electronics Engineer to join our New Product Development Team. Your focus will be the design and delivery of electronics solutions for our Materials Analysis products.

Location: We are based in High Wycombe (Cressex) and have hybrid working – typically 3 days in‑office and 2 days at home. The week consists of 37 working hours, flexible start times, and a 12:30 finish on Friday.

Role And Responsibilities
- Take responsibility for technical solutions within specific electronics development projects, working flexibly within a multidisciplinary team to deliver the product, and set up and participate in design reviews while keeping thorough design and implementation records.
- Provide “go‑to” expertise on electronics issues for the wider technology team, mentor colleagues to develop their skills, and contribute to the architectural design process.
- Design and execute tests to validate system solutions throughout the product development lifecycle, ensuring new products are transferred adequately to manufacturing and customer support with appropriate documentation.
- Support existing products and provide ongoing support for new products as needed, including managing engineering changes through official ECR/ECO/BP procedures in our PLM tool.
- Plan, estimate, prioritise and manage own work, working closely with other team members to achieve integrated solutions consistent with project milestones.
- Recommend new tools and techniques to continually improve product quality and the development process.
- Maintain an understanding of concepts, techniques and requirements of your role, keep up with trends, and maintain good knowledge of the organisation.
- Operate at all times in accordance with health & safety legislation.
- Travel to the USA (Santa Barbara) occasionally – typically a four‑week period to support onboarding, with follow‑up of approximately 2 weeks on several occasions; periods are flexible and will be agreed with the successful candidate.
