I am currently working with the fastest go-to data platform for sports fans. A centralised home where trusted and passionate supporters can share their voices, insights, and emotions without being drowned out by pundits or fragmented across social media. Their mission is to amplify the perspectives of those who live and breathe the game, and to create a space where genuine fan sentiment drives the conversation.

This is a rare opportunity to join the founding team and play a critical role in shaping the technical foundations, scalability, and long-term success of the platform from day one.

The role

As a Senior Backend Engineer with strong TypeScript expertise, you'll be responsible for designing, building, and evolving the backend systems that power their fan-focused platform. You'll work closely with the founding team to architect reliable, scalable services and APIs, making key technical decisions as we grow from an early-stage product into a mature platform. You'll take ownership of core backend domains, influence engineering standards, and help ensure the platform is secure, performant, and built to scale.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, developing, and maintaining backend services and APIs using TypeScript.
  • Taking ownership of backend architecture, data models, and service boundaries.
  • Making pragmatic decisions on when to leverage existing tools and services versus building custom solutions.
  • Working closely with frontend and mobile engineers to design clean, well-documented APIs.
  • Collaborating with product owners to ensure the product vision is accurately reflected in the technical roadmap and backlog.
  • Considering performance, scalability, and reliability in every sprint.
  • Ensuring best practices around security, authentication, authorization, and data protection.
  • Establishing and promoting backend coding standards, tooling, and development practices.
  • Contributing to technical strategy discussions and helping shape long-term platform architecture.
  • Proactively identifying technical risks and opportunities for improvement as the product scales.

About you

  • 5+ years of commercial software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend development.
  • Strong TypeScript expertise, ideally in a Node.js backend environment.
  • Experience designing and building APIs (REST and/or GraphQL).
  • Solid understanding of backend architecture patterns, data modelling, and distributed systems.
  • Experience working with databases (SQL and/or NoSQL) and caching layers.
  • Comfortable owning systems end-to-end: development, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Strong communicator who enjoys collaborating, sharing ideas, and giving and receiving feedback.
  • Opinionated but pragmatic, you care about building the right thing, not just the clever thing.
  • Experience working in early-stage or fast-moving product teams is a big plus.
  • Passion for sports is welcome but not required, technical excellence comes first.

Remuneration & Benefits

  • Up to £110,000 + equity + benefits.
  • Work closely with a brilliant, mission-led team.
