Why this role matters
At OVO, our mission is simple but huge: solve the climate crisis through Plan Zero. As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll own the end-to-end development of complex, core systems that push our technology forward. In this role, you’ll lead technical initiatives, make critical design decisions, and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to bring AI-driven products directly to market via mobile applications.
What you’ll be doing
- Technical Leadership & Architecture: Drive the architectural vision for key features, design robust and scalable systems, and shape our technical roadmap.
- Engineering Excellence: Champion software best practices by writing clean, performant code, conducting rigorous code reviews, and implementing robust automated testing.
- Product Execution & Delivery: Translate complex technical projects into clear, executable tasks within an Agile framework, resolving blockers to keep delivery moving.
- Mentorship & Community: Lead, mentor, and elevate fellow engineers while actively contributing to OVO’s wider engineering community through workshops and knowledge sharing.
What you’ll bring
You don’t need to tick every single box to apply - if you have the core toolkit and a passion for problem-solving, we want to hear from you!
- The Essentials
- Agile Software Experience: Significant hands-on experience building and delivering high-quality, clean code within agile environments.
- Backend & Microservices Expertise: Strong skill in designing scalable microservices using languages like Node.js, Python, or TypeScript.
- Cloud & DevOps: Practical experience with cloud platforms (GCP or AWS), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and modern CI/CD practices.
- Frontend Frameworks: Proficiency in modern frontend technologies such as React.js and/or React Native.
- Leadership & Communication: A proven track record of mentoring engineers, driving technical initiatives, and collaborating in high-ownership team settings.
- Nice to have (but not essential)
- Prior experience bringing AI-driven solutions to market within the constraints of mobile platforms.
Where & how you’ll work
We believe in flexibility that works. You’ll be assigned to your closest hub office (Bristol, Glasgow, or London). We expect hub-based team members in the office at least once a week and for in-person OVO Connection events, paired with flexible work-from-home options.
Sponsorship
Please note, we’re currently unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.
What’s in it for you?
We reward impact. On top of your core salary (£58,000-£85,000 depending on experience), you’ll get:
- 15% On-Target Discretionary Bonus: Tied to our collective Plan Zero mission performance.
- 9% Flex Pay: An extra 9% on top of your salary (4% auto-enrolled into pension, 5% yours to take as cash, put into pension, or spend on flex benefits).
- Time Off: 34 days of holiday (including bank holidays).
- Green & Home Perks: Up to £400 towards OVO Energy plans, plus discounts on solar, smart thermostats, and EV chargers.
- Family: Flexible hours and enhanced parental leave.
- Health & Lifestyle: Healthcare cash plan / private medical cover, gym discounts, cycle-to-work scheme, and ultra-low emission car leasing.

✨Brush Up on Your Coding Skills
For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.
✨Know Your Tools and Frameworks
Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned.
