An exciting opportunity has become available for a Product Design Engineer to join the Technical Team within the Scolmore Group. The role covers the full product lifecycle, including the design and development of market‑leading products, as well as the sourcing, evaluation, and technical validation of products for the UK wholesale market. This includes sample review, supplier engagement, and the assessment of regulatory and compliance documentation to ensure products meet UK requirements.

Main Duties

  • Apply innovative problem‑solving skills to support the vision specification for new product concepts, primarily focused on lighting and luminaires, while also supporting product development across all sectors of the business.
  • Manage projects from concept to launch with supporting documentation, including but not limited to lighting performance, installation manuals, product specification documents and compliance where applicable.
  • Participate in brainstorms and gather research to support new product concepts contributing to both lighting and non‑lighting product ranges.
  • Champion great design to produce products that meet all performance and functional criteria.
  • Take an active, hands‑on role to ensure that all engineering problems are resolved thoroughly.
  • Use established development processes, good engineering practice and discipline to deliver robust design solutions in agreed timeframe.
  • Maintain all supporting documentation to ensure accurate hand over either to other teams within the UK or Far East.
  • Communicate between all teams within technical department to ensure effective and timely input.
  • Communicate to the far east to ensure projects are manufactured to a high standard within a set timeframe.
  • Prepare for (and participate in when required) design reviews with Product Design Manager and/or Technical Director.
  • Support with any Intellectual property applications within the business.
  • Conduct design reviews with company directors, as required.

Skills and Experience

  • A degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline or equivalent.
  • Previous relevant experience of product design or mechanical engineering.
  • Sound understanding and knowledge of basic physical principles.
  • Knowledge and understanding of injection moulding and manufacturing.
  • A creative and considered approach to problem solving, adhering to clear design processes.
  • An understanding of practical and methodical design development through prototyping and testing.
  • Proven ability to communicate through 2 and 3 dimensional media, e.g. sketching, CAD (Solidworks is preferable but training will be offered), model making.
  • Technical and personal credibility to work effectively with other teams within the business.
  • Ability to plan ahead, prioritise tasks and coordinate with the work of others.
  • Excellent communication, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Self‑starter - ability to work independently.
  • Ability to travel to Far East for project transfer/production requirement desirable.
  • Some electrical or power‑related knowledge (e.g. current ratings, protection, standards, and safety requirements) is preferred, but a willingness to support all product categories is essential. Training will be provided.
