About the Department:

The Science Department at Outwood Academy Brumby is a friendly and welcoming team made up of 5 teachers and a Science Technician with a wide range of experience and skills. Several members of the team have leadership experience, whilst others are happy to hone their craft in the classroom and support newer staff. There are many opportunities for staff to develop a range of career opportunities within the school and the Trust, making the Science Department at Outwood Academy Brumby a fantastic place to develop your career.

Teaching takes place in the department’s five modern labs/classrooms with every teacher having their own dedicated room. Every classroom has a visualiser and a large screen and these are used extensively by the team.

The curriculum has undergone a recent review and has been redesigned to ensure that students can recap prior knowledge on a regular basis and also learn new content at a level that is appropriate. Our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure that all students get a firm grounding. This is differentiated by depth, as opposed to students racing onto the next topic. This approach develops more confident scientists as students move through the curriculum and helps them to retain their new learning for longer. In addition, where appropriate, students in KS3 have exposure to higher topics sooner, and more frequently. This has ensured that the Science Curriculum from year 7 to year 11 is engaging, challenging and builds on prior knowledge to deepen students’ learning.

As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for a qualification through AQA GCSE Combined Science. The programme of study is resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. We aim to make all our teachers ‘experts’ in preparing students for GCSE examinations, using our thorough and systematic methods devised over many years. We have the benefit of support from the trust’s team of expert Science School Improvement Partners, who provide support, materials, advice, coaching and who model and team-teach in lessons alongside us to develop our expertise.
