Are you a meticulous and experienced science professional ready to lead the technical service provision for an entire science department? This pivotal post requires you to organise, deliver, and develop technical services to the science department, supporting the teaching of a range of science subjects.

Our Science Department is a diverse and experienced team, comprising both Early Career Teachers and colleagues with decades of teaching experience. We are committed to maintaining high expectations and aspirations for every student while delivering engaging, enjoyable, and inspiring lessons. These lessons are facilitated by our technician team who prepare all practical resources for lessons and assist with the set up of specialist equipment.

The department consists of a Head of Science, a Second in Department, and eight additional teaching staff. The pillar of the department is our technician team, who strive to ensure the needs of teachers and students are continually met. We benefit from four well-equipped laboratories, with most teachers having access to their own dedicated teaching space. Our technician team have their own dedicated workspace and work closely with the team of teachers and Head of Science to ensure that we have everything required for our science lessons to elicit the best outcomes for our students.

Responsibilities:

  • This managerial role organizes and develops technical services, requiring the preparation and setting up of equipment and materials for practical use, strictly adhering to manufacturer's instructions.
  • The Senior Technician manages safety compliance, ensuring the safe storage of materials, disposal of used chemicals, and undertaking safety checks in line with COSHH and H&S legislation.
  • A crucial component is providing supervision and guidance to other Technician(s), monitoring their work quality, and ensuring their efficient deployment, reporting difficulties to the Head of Science.
  • They also monitor stock levels, compile inventories (especially regarding COSHH), and ensure laboratories are clear and prepared daily.

Qualifications:

  • Essential qualifications include a Level A2 Science Qualification and qualifications related to COSHH/CLEAPSS.
  • Candidates must demonstrate at least one year’s essential experience working within a specific curriculum area.
  • Desirable attributes include experience of line managing colleagues and working in a school environment.
  • Essential skills encompass effective communication, maintaining confidentiality, proficiency in standard ICT packages, and the ability to prioritize and manage their own and others' workload.
  • Candidates must be willing and able to enhance their qualifications.
