Job Title: Caretaker – Nutley Edge Holiday Cottages, East Sussex
Contract: Permanent
Hours: 30 hours per week on a flexible rota basis
Salary: £21,606 per annum (additional overtime hours at £13 per hour)

Nutley Edge is a charity owned site near Uckfield in East Sussex and on the border of the beautiful Ashdown Forest offering high quality self-catering holiday lets on an 11 acre site of fields and woodland. Our farmhouse, yurt and holiday cottages are used for supporting people with learning disabilities on group holidays alongside some general holiday makers, short term lets to local people and group stays.
About the Role: We are looking for a new caretaker to join our small friendly team. You will need to be reliable, honest and self‑motivated with a strong sense of initiative and pride in your work. Experience in building maintenance, general repairs and grounds work is required. You will need to be physically fit to perform manual tasks and outdoor work.
Your Responsibilities
- Grounds – trimming hedges, cutting grass, planting and weeding, maintaining fencing
- Accommodation – general repairs, basic plumbing, decoration and window cleaning
- Completing health and safety checks
- Maintain cleanliness across the site, including grounds, gullies, driveways, and entrances
- Liaise with external contractors to ensure high quality repairs and maintenance
- Be part of the out-of-hours on-call rota for guests (additional payment if living off-site)
- Uphold site security
Live On‑site Option
You could choose to live on site in a newly renovated self‑contained cottage (one double and a small single) for a discounted rental payment of £500 per month inclusive of utilities. In return we would expect you to keep an eye on our site when the office is closed, be available to help our guests out with any problems most weekday evenings and some weekends on a rota basis (available on phone and remaining within a 45 min drive).
A couple would be considered and a small, well‑behaved dog/cat would be acceptable but this position is not suitable for people with children. Paid, regular cleaning work is also available if a couple.
In exchange, you will get to live in a stunning location, only 30min to the South Coast and in easy reach of the Ashdown Forest and the surrounding areas. (Licence agreement for 12 months and subject to up‑to 6 months\’ probation)
Requirements
Essential Criteria
- Right to work in the UK. Please note: Outward will not provide visa sponsorship
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, or carpentry
- Experienced using hand tools and light machinery
- Excellent attention to detail
- Friendly, approachable, and professional demeanour
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Physically fit to perform manual tasks and outdoor work
- Good working knowledge of Health and Safety and COSHH (training provided if necessary)
- Flexible and adaptable to site needs
- Have a Clean UK Driving Licence
- Positive and empowering attitude towards people with disabilities
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in hospitality, caretaking, or facilities management
- Familiarity with health and safety regulations
- First Aid certification
