Contract Length: 6 months
Rate: £70/hour (Umbrella, Inside IR35)
Hours: 37 hours per week
On-site Requirement: Majority of the time on-site
Overview: We are looking for a Lead Mechanical Engineer to act as the Design Authority for a next-generation radar development programme at BAE Systems. In this senior role, you\'ll provide both hands-on technical expertise and leadership to a small team of mechanical and CAD engineers, ensuring successful design, integration, and delivery of complex mechanical systems.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as Mechanical Design Authority for a future radar demonstrator product.
  • Lead and mentor a small team of engineers.
  • Own and approve key mechanical design decisions across the project lifecycle.
  • Drive the design, build, test, and integration of complex mechanical systems.
  • Engage in hands-on analysis (e.g., FEA, CFD) and reviews.
  • Collaborate closely with the Project Engineering Manager, Project Manager, and Technical Authority.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in areas such as composites, thermal management, or structural design.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, engineering standards, and lifecycle requirements.
  • Use tools such as SAP PDM for design data management.
Required Experience & Skills:
  • Proven experience in mechanical design for complex engineering systems.
  • Deep expertise in one or more of the following: composites, CFD, FEA, structures, propulsion, or thermal systems.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical behaviours under static and dynamic load, shock, and vibration.
  • Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with engineering lifecycle from requirements through to in-service support.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent experience.
