About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Project Manager to lead the delivery of heritage and conservation projects, with a particular focus on historic stonework and masonry. This role is ideal for a professional with a strong background as a Banker Mason or Stone Mason who has progressed into project management and is passionate about preserving historic structures. You will oversee projects from initial survey through to completion, ensuring works are delivered to the highest conservation standards, on time, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage heritage and conservation projects involving historic buildings, monuments, and listed structures
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee all aspects of masonry and stone conservation works
- Interpret architectural drawings, conservation reports, and specifications
- Liaise with clients, conservation officers, architects, and stakeholders
- Prepare project programmes, budgets, and resource plans
- Supervise site teams, subcontractors, and specialist craftspeople
- Ensure compliance with heritage regulations, conservation best practices, and health & safety standards
- Conduct site inspections and quality control checks to ensure craftsmanship meets required standards
- Procure materials, with an emphasis on traditional and compatible materials
- Produce progress reports and manage project documentation
Requirements
- Proven background as a Banker Mason or Stone Mason (minimum hands-on experience)
- Demonstrable experience in managing construction or conservation projects
- Strong understanding of traditional masonry techniques and materials
- Knowledge of heritage conservation principles and listed building regulations
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
- Excellent organisational and leadership skills
- Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience working on listed buildings, scheduled monuments, or heritage sites
- Formal qualifications in Construction Management, Heritage Conservation, or a related field
- Membership of relevant professional bodies (e.g. CIOB, IHBC)
- Experience in lime mortars, stone matching, carving, and restoration techniques
- SMSTS or equivalent health & safety certification
