The Deputy Head of English at Reddish Hall School is a key leadership role within our specialist SEMH provision, driving excellence in English teaching while supporting the wider strategic vision of the school. Working closely with the Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team, therapy teams and colleagues across the school, you will lead the development of a responsive, inclusive and trauma-informed English curriculum that meets the complex needs of pupils who may have experienced disrupted education, attachment difficulties and barriers to learning.

This role combines curriculum leadership with high-quality classroom practice, ensuring that pupils make strong academic progress while developing confidence, resilience and readiness for their next stage of education, training or employment. You will champion inclusive practice, model outstanding teaching, and play a central role in maintaining a calm, purposeful and aspirational learning environment.

  • Lead the strategic development and continuous improvement of the English curriculum across all key stages, ensuring it reflects the needs of pupils with SEMH and additional learning needs.
  • Model and deliver high-quality English teaching, using evidence-informed, trauma-aware and autism-informed approaches to promote literacy, communication and independence.
  • Monitor, analyse and respond to pupil progress data, setting ambitious but achievable targets and driving improved outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with the SENCo, therapy teams and SLT to integrate EHCP targets, IEPs and therapeutic strategies into classroom practice.
  • Support whole-school development, including policy review, curriculum planning, behaviour systems and safeguarding practice.
  • Oversee key elements of literacy development, including the school library and initiatives such as Accelerated Reader/Star Reading.
  • Promote pupil welfare and inclusion, potentially acting as a form tutor, building strong relationships with families and contributing to multi-agency working.

We are seeking calm, compassionate, and proactive individuals committed to supporting pupils with autism and complex needs.

Essential qualities and experience:

  • Experience in educational, childcare, or SEN settings
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond positively to challenging behaviour
