Our Bury St Edmunds is a well-established Business Improvement District covering the town centre of the thriving market town of Bury St Edmunds, in West Suffolk. The BID was created in 2010, and it has over 400 BID business members. The town centre is a mix of the old and the new, with history dating back over a thousand years and a modern shopping centre that opened 17 years ago. Currently, the retail vacancy rate sits at 6.2%, well below half of the national average, and footfall levels continue to be strong and compare favourably with other similar locations in the UK.
The BID works closely with its businesses, the public and other key stakeholders to enhance the trading environment of its members. This has been achieved by improving the town centre environment, organising regular high-profile large events, providing support for its members, and promoting and marketing the town to both residents and potential visitors. The organisation is also responsible for the purchase, provision and deployment of most of the Christmas decorations in the town centre.
The town has the reputation of being the ‘Foodie Capital of Suffolk’ and has a strong hospitality sector, but retail continues to be the largest single sector, along with strong representation from the Professional Services. Wellbeing and entertainment businesses make up the remaining membership. Due to the proactivity of the organisation, the profile of the town as a visitor destination is very high, both locally and further afield, with plans to expand this internationally soon.
Those interested in the position should have recent senior management experience and must provide evidence of good communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills. The successful candidate will be the public face of the organisation, so recent experience in public speaking and interacting with the media would be desirable. The post would suit an enthusiastic, resilient, determined and self-motivated individual.
The role includes responsibility for the financial management of the organisation and interaction with partner organisations. Previous experience of working within a BID or a similar environment would be useful but is not considered essential. Knowledge and understanding of the relevant legal requirements, legislation and regulations for the role is important, including those relating to event management.
This vacancy provides a great opportunity to work in a fabulous market town with a great mix of national and independent businesses. The organisation has strong foundations and a proven record of achievements and will continue to play a key role in contributing to the future success of the town, under the direction of a new leader. The new appointee will have the exciting opportunity to influence and shape the organisation and the town centre itself, as they contribute to and oversee the future growth and development of the BID.
The Board will put in place a transitional technical support programme to assist the new postholder, with a period of guidance and assistance being provided by the outgoing postholder, as required.
Salary: The salary range on offer is between £40k and £45k, dependent upon the capability and experience of the selected applicant.
