We're hiring an Engineering Manager to work with our Genetics Squad. This is a vital role where you'll support scaling our systems to respond to increasing numbers of volunteers and manage multiple engineering teams through a key stage of growth. You will work with Genetic Data (both genotyped and imputed) and support the development and maintenance of pipelines and systems that process data, ensure quality control, and generate data releases for researchers.

Our Future Health is the UK’s largest ever health research programme, bringing people together to develop new ways to detect, prevent and treat diseases. We are a charity, supported by the UK Government, in partnership with charities and industry. We work closely with the NHS and with public authorities across all nations and regions of the UK. Our plan is to bring together 5 million volunteers from right across the UK who will be asked to contribute information to help build one of the most detailed pictures we have ever had of people’s health. Researchers will be able to use this information to make new discoveries about human health and diseases.
To be successful in this role you'll need to have experience of some of the following:
- You're a confident communicator who can work across multidisciplinary teams made up of Scientists, Software Engineers, Product Managers, and other stakeholders.
- You're comfortable bridging technical and non-technical perspectives.
- You’re skilled at translating business and technical needs, managing expectations, and leading challenging conversations with senior stakeholders.
- You can listen to the needs of technical and business stakeholders and interpret them, and effectively manage stakeholder expectations.
- You can support or host difficult discussions within the team or with diverse senior stakeholders.
- Experience working in an Agile development team following best practices including GitHub, code review, unit tests, TDD and CI/CD.
- Experience line managing and coaching engineers in a successful, cross-functional development team.
- An understanding and working knowledge of information governance and data security approaches appropriate for sensitive health data.
- Experience in operationally managing software components/service once live, including: observability best practices, logging best practices, error reporting, debugging and live incident management.
- Experience using tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, New Relic etc.
- You are highly proficient in JIRA (building & maintaining JIRA sprint boards, building & maintaining JIRA timeline views, analysing sprint metrics, building queries to facilitate ticket navigation, building ticket filling standards, building JIRA alerts).
- Ideally hold experience with management tools (Asana, Trello etc).
- You have experience working with genetic data (genotyping data and/or next-generation sequencing data).
- You are familiar with bioinformatics file formats (VCF, pVCF, BGEN) and common tooling (bcftools, PLINK etc).
- You have experience with the design and deployment of complex data schemas.
- You have experience building and maintaining robust, scalable and efficient pipelines capable of processing very large amounts of data from one or multiple systems.
- You know how to create repeatable and reusable products.
- The ability to be hands on showing proficiency in Python and Bash.
- You have experience working with data lakes; experience with Spark, Databricks.
- Can demonstrate experience working within cloud environments (ideally Azure), and workflow management systems (e.g. Dagster, Airflow, Prefect).
- You are highly proficient in containerisation (e.g. Docker) and deployment (e.g. Kubernetes).
- Experience working with external data suppliers (defining requirements for suppliers, defining Service Level Agreements, attending joint meetings when needed).
