Despite big improvements in healthcare in our lifetimes, today millions of people in the UK still live in poor health as they get older. Diseases like cancer, dementia, diabetes, and heart disease affect the lives of many people in our communities. Our goal is to create a world-leading resource for health research, to improve our understanding and spot the patterns of how and why common diseases start, so treatments can begin sooner and be more effective. Our Future Health will be the UK's largest ever health research programme, bringing people together to develop new ways to detect, prevent, and treat diseases. We are a charity, supported by the UK Government, in partnership with charities and industry. We work closely with the NHS and with public authorities across all nations and regions of the UK.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, collaborative and strategic Participant and Public Involvement (PPI) Manager to join our Ethics and Involvement team. Reporting to the Head of PPI, you will play a central role in advancing Our Future Health's commitment to meaningful, ethical and inclusive involvement across our research programme. You will work collaboratively across teams — and directly with participants and public contributors — to operationalise our Participant and Public Involvement and Engagement Strategy, ensuring that public perspectives shape research design, delivery and decision‑making. This is a highly visible role requiring both strategic oversight and hands‑on delivery in a fast‑scaling, complex organisation.

What you'll be doing

  • Delivering dialogue and PPI activities
  • Manage the commissioning, development and delivery of large‑scale public and participant dialogue activities to generate insights that inform the ongoing design and delivery of the research programme
  • Ensure dialogue outcomes are communicated clearly, reflected upon and operationalised by internal teams and stakeholders
  • Lead and coordinate a range of PPI activities including workshops, advisory panels and focus groups, working closely with our Involvement Network

Strategy implementation and values

  • Support delivery of the commitments and principles set out in Our Future Health's Participant and Public Involvement and Engagement Strategy
  • Ensure PPI activities align with organisational goals, values and ethical principles — demonstrating openness, accountability and trustworthiness in all involvement work

Advising and supporting teams

  • Proactively identify areas across the organisation where PPI can add value and inform development
  • Advise teams on best practice involvement approaches and ethical considerations, including inclusive methods tailored to different stakeholder groups
  • Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with research teams, external partners, community organisations, participants and members of the public
  • Work closely with colleagues in the Ethics and Involvement team to identify where PPI input is required across the research lifecycle
  • Track, synthesise and disseminate PPI insights to influence operational and policy decisions in a timely and effective way

Internal governance

  • Support the effective management of Our Future Health's Public Advisory Board, including preparation of meeting materials, actions and follow‑up activities to ensure meaningful impact
  • Work with the Head of PPI and PPI Officer to support and advocate for the Involvement Network across the organisation
  • Represent Our Future Health at external meetings and events, sharing insights from our PPI work and bringing back learning from the wider research ecosystem
  • Monitor and proactively respond to evolving PPI best practice, ensuring continuous improvement of our approach

Requirements

  • At least three years' experience commissioning and project managing large‑scale deliberative public, patient or participant dialogues
  • Demonstrable experience working in PPI or a closely related role
  • Experience supporting or managing a Board or equivalent governance structure to enable impactful involvement
  • Knowledge of ethical challenges in longitudinal healthcare research, and experience facilitating ethical deliberation with public contributors or participants
  • Experience designing, delivering and evaluating a range of PPI strategies and tools
  • Strong understanding of how to capture, track and apply PPI insights to influence operational and policy decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into accessible language
  • Proven ability to build partnerships and work collaboratively across diverse stakeholder groups
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively and manage multiple workstreams in a fast‑paced, scaling organisation
  • Confidence, diplomacy and excellent interpersonal skills when working with participants, the public, colleagues and senior Board members
  • A passion for ensuring public and participant voices shape the future of healthcare research
