Role Summary:
The tax landscape has seen constant change in the regulatory and tax environment over the last 20 years. This has led to an increasing number of exciting opportunities for in-house tax teams. The Life Tax Team, a sub-team within M&G Group Tax, are responsible for the tax compliance, reporting and advisory of the UK life insurance companies in the group. The main life insurance company in the group owns one of the largest With-Profits Funds in the UK. The structure and complexity of the business makes it a unique area of tax to work in.
The role is for a 9 month fixed term contract to provide additional resource for quarterly tax reporting which takes up a considerable amount of the team\’s time. The individual would be a qualified tax professional with life assurance tax experience. The individual will ideally have a strong tax accounting background with experience in the Insurance industry. We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with strong and effective communication skills. The role will involve the review and preparation of work and providing guidance to more junior members of the team. They will be working closely with internal accounting teams and external auditors. The individual must also have advanced Excel skills and experience in maintaining/developing complex models.
Key Responsibilities:
Quarterly Tax Financial Reporting

  • Manage and review the quarterly tax reporting deliverables for quarterly financial reporting under IFRS, UK GAAP and Solvency II. This will also involve the review/preparation of a life tax computation in OneSource corporate tax software.
  • Review and preparation of technical reports/papers relating to the quarterly financial numbers.
  • Manage and review the production of tax disclosures for life company statutory accounts.
  • Undertake tax technical research to support technical issues arising from tax financial reporting.
  • Support the team in the drafting of tax papers, presentations and other documentation as required.
  • Liaise directly with internal colleagues and external service providers to query and challenge information received ensuring an appropriate level of accuracy and quality.
  • Dealing with ad hoc tax queries relating to the life companies in the group.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior members of the team.

Relationship Management

  • Maintain close working relationships with Tax, Finance, Actuarial and other teams within the business and work collaboratively.
  • Attend regular meetings with financial reporting teams and external auditors.
  • Coordinate deliverables from service providers, seek to streamline the working relationship and identify efficiencies and process improvements where possible.

Control Environment

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and take personal accountability to maintain and enhance controls and ensure compliance with the Group\’s risk and controls framework.
  • Assist in the documentation of tax processes and evidencing of controls.
  • Liaising with internal/external auditors.
  • Keep up to date with tax, accounting and other regulatory standards relevant to the role.

  • Solid tax accounting experience
  • Good working knowledge of Life insurance tax
  • Good planning and organisational skills
  • Attention to detail and analytical mindset
  • Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience in using Microsoft Power Apps an advantage
  • Experience of working with corporate tax software (OneSource)

Experience & Educational Qualification:

  • An accounting or tax qualification (ACCA, ACA, CTA)
  • Experience of working in a UK corporate tax compliance and reporting team either in the life insurance industry or in the profession.
