Overview Rapiscan Systems is an industry leader in detection technology, providing cargo and vehicle inspection systems and services for ports, borders, military, high-threat facilities, and checkpoints to help customers combat terrorism, drug smuggling, illegal immigration, and trade fraud. We offer a broad array of scanning system configurations that leverage low-, medium-, and high-energy X-ray technology—or multiple X-ray technologies—to address each customer’s unique security application requirements. Our commitment to excellence in imaging performance, innovative design, and uncompromising quality ensures our solutions consistently deliver best-in-class imaging, high reliability, and operator satisfaction, to help customers find threats and contraband with ease and confidence. Job Overview Working within the Cargo and Vehicle Inspection section of Rapiscan Systems Engineering team, you will be involved in projects at all stages of the product lifecycle, from initial concept generation, new product introduction, to continuous improvement in manufacture. The successful candidate will work within a team of Electronics Design Engineers, reporting to the Chief Electronics Engineer, designing electronic components and systems on X-ray Cargo and Vehicle Inspection (CVI) scanning equipment. Rapiscan’s products use proprietary data acquisition systems based on modern electronic components and techniques. Joining the hardware design team, this role is responsible for the design and implementation of next-generation core technology for data acquisition within the Cargo Division. Managing BoMs and revision control, as well as lifecycle management, will be important aspects of this role. Responsibilities Research and development of precision analog signal conditioning and acquisition (transimpedance amplifiers and signal ADC). Board-level high-speed digital circuit design utilizing FPGAs and embedded processors. Design-for-manufacturing reviews of production PCB assemblies. Design, code, implement, and verify FPGAs (Xilinx & Lattice) using Verilog. Design, code, and debug low-level applications, primarily using ‘C’, for FPGA processors (Microblaze), microcontrollers (MSP430, AVR, Tiva), and embedded Linux microprocessor systems (Sitara AM5728). Realize algorithms defined by floating point models in fixed-point FPGA DSP slices. Collaborate with outside design services to deliver PCB layouts, SI analysis, and mechanical board design. Conduct practical hands-on bring-up, testing, and diagnostics of hardware boards. Author engineering documentation following team procedures. Support manufacturing, commissioning, and service departments. Some international travel may be required for technical collaboration. Duties may be modified or assigned as needed to meet business needs. Experience and Attributes An all-round electronics engineer capable of handling hardware design, analog, digital, and embedded software. Proven experience in circuit board design and hardware bring-up. Experience with bare-metal software development using TI Code Composer Studio, Vivado SDK, AVR Studio. Proficiency with processor J-TAG emulators/debuggers and lab test equipment such as oscilloscopes, DVMs, and PSUs. A hands-on approach to working with circuit boards, including soldering, reworking, and measurement. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with specialist teams. A flexible engineer who can quickly learn new tools and ideas, work under pressure, and operate independently or within a small, dynamic team. Qualifications Broad knowledge of electronics, design techniques, and EDA tools for hardware and embedded software. Understanding of EMC, high-speed signal integrity, and design for manufacture and test. BEng/BSc in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or a relevant field (Required). MEng/MSc in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or a relevant field (Desired).
