The Systems Safety Engineer 4 is a key member of the engineering team responsible for ensuring the safety and regulatory compliance of marine navigation and bridge systems developed for OSI’s government and naval markets. This role is critical in identifying, analyzing, and mitigating system-level hazards while supporting the development of safe, reliable, and mission-critical products.

The Systems Safety Engineer leads and executes safety engineering activities across the full system lifecycle, ensuring that safety requirements are properly defined, implemented, verified, and maintained. The incumbent collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, including software, hardware, integration and test, production, manufacturing, and logistics and may take on technical leadership responsibilities for safety-critical aspects of projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develops and maintains system safety programs, including hazard analyses (e.g., FHA, FMEA, FTA) and safety assessments.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and mitigates system hazards, ensuring risks are reduced to acceptable levels in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Defines and allocates safety requirements, ensuring traceability throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Supports system architecture and design activities with a focus on safety, including interface definition and failure mode considerations.
  • Collaborates with subsystem teams to ensure safety is integrated into design, implementation, and verification activities.
  • Ensures compliance with relevant government, military, and maritime safety standards (e.g., IMO, naval standards).
  • Participates in and may lead safety reviews, design reviews, and certification activities with customers and regulatory bodies.
  • Develops safety-related documentation, including Safety Assessment Reports, Hazard Logs, and safety cases.
  • Supports system integration, verification, validation, and acceptance testing from a safety perspective, including development of safety-critical test procedures.
  • Identifies safety-related deficiencies and develops corrective actions to address risks and non-compliances.
  • Evaluates impacts of obsolescence and design changes on system safety and recommends mitigations.
  • Contributes to technical proposals and RFQ responses with safety engineering inputs.
  • Manages safety engineering scope, schedule, and risk tracking; communicates safety status to project stakeholders and management.
  • Provides mentorship and guidance to other engineers on system safety practices and methodologies.
  • Works effectively both independently and within cross-functional teams with minimal supervision.
KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in Engineering or Physics, Engineering or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 8 years engineering experience, minimum 6 years’ experience in Systems Engineering; Experience in marine electronics and integrated bridge systems a significant asset.
  • Experience in defense or government domain preferably in naval ship sector a significant asset.
  • Experience leading a team of Engineers on projects.
  • Proven track record in the timely delivery of engineering related projects.
  • Strong knowledge of marine navigation and tactical sensors or systems.
  • Excellent knowledge of Systems Engineering principles, standards and best practices.
  • Working experience in network design and architecture.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with requirements and verification management tools such as DOORS.
  • Knowledge of safety engineering and human factors engineering is an asset.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain a location relevant security clearance.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
