A sensor board comes back from three months at sea with salt crystals under the conformal coating and a fault nobody can reproduce. By lunch you’ve found it - a corroded joint dropping a rail under load - and by Friday your redesign is on the bench. Next month you’re doing something completely different: designing the sensing chain that could make C-Star constellations the best in the world at detecting and classifying surface vessels, or integrating a custom sensor for the US Navy.
What Oshen is
We make the ocean’s eyes & ears - we tell people what’s happening on the 70% of our globe taken up by our oceans. We do this with C-Star constellations, swarms of one-metre, wind-and-solar robots that sail the open ocean. Ours is the only surface robot to sail into a Category 5 hurricane and come back with the data. We design and build them in Plymouth and deploy them for the US Government, the Royal Navy, and climate scientists, giving information across an ocean the modern world depends on and currently can’t see.
If we succeed, navies will find dark ships and underwater threats before they reach critical infrastructure. Governments will predict hurricanes and other extreme weather earlier. Scientists will better understand how the ocean and climate are changing.
The people joining now will shape both the technology and the company. Very few engineers get to take something from an idea in the workshop to a real mission in the Atlantic, and know they helped achieve something nobody had done before. Here, you can.
The role
You own hardware and software problems that come with new sensing methods and ever larger C-Star constellations. You’re involved in full ground up redesigns of the full C-Star robots, diagnosis from sea trials, and integrating new sensors. Your work will span almost anything that could fall under engineering, but an electronics background will be helpful.
Who you are
- Strong electronics fundamentals (practical electronics experience, digital electronics, embedded systems) and comfortable working with the software that touches them. In practise this means you very likely have a 2:1 or higher in an electrical engineering degree or similar.
- 2-4 years experience preferred, even better if at a fast growing startup.
- Reasons from first principles across domains, able to research and learn new engineering topics across domains. The problems you solve will often require expertise across a broad area, and you’re unlikely to start out with all the skills required.
- Evidence of self-directed technical work beyond any job or degree.
- Maritime or defence experience is helpful.
Our goal of fundamentally changing our understanding of the oceans with thousands of eyes and ears is worthwhile but difficult - there’s a reason nobody has achieved this before. It’ll be a team of close knit people who work hard towards a common goal that achieves this. Sometimes, there’ll be long hours, sometimes tense debugging alongside teammates, and figuring out problems nobody has solved before.
