We are working exclusively with an innovative and rapidly growing industrial advanced engineering business based in Nottingham, who are looking to appoint a Finance Director to play a key role in their next stage of growth.
Having historically been heavily focused on R&D within the high-value engineering space, the business has now entered an exciting new commercial phase. Turnover has grown from approximately 500k in recent years to a 2.5m target this year, with the business currently on track to achieve or exceed this.
With a number of significant commercial projects in the pipeline, including individual projects worth up to 2m, the business has ambitious plans for continued growth. Currently supported by external accountants and bookkeeping services, the successful candidate will take ownership of the finance function, bringing key activities in-house, improving processes and systems, and providing the financial, strategic and commercial insight required to support the company's continued development.
The role will also play an important part in preparing the business for potential external investment, including the production of high-quality financial reporting and investor packs.
Key Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the finance function and financial strategy, bringing key activities in-house.
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, management accounts, cash flow and financial reporting.
- Develop financial packs and reporting for the leadership team and potential investors.
- Provide commercial financial insight across high-value customer projects, including projects up to 2m.
- Monitor project profitability, margins, costs, cash flow and working capital.
- Build and improve financial processes, controls and systems as the business scales.
- Maximise Xero through integrations and automation, reducing manual processes.
- Work closely with the leadership team on strategic and commercial decision-making.
- Manage relationships with external accountants, auditors and other professional advisers.
- Support R&D tax claims, grant funding and statutory compliance.
- Develop the financial infrastructure required to support continued growth and future investment.
About You
We are looking for an experienced finance professional with genuine SME experience who can build, professionalise and take ownership of a finance function within a growing business. This could suit a Finance Director, Financial Controller, Head of Finance or senior finance professional ready to take the next step.
You will ideally have:
- ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification.
- Strong senior finance experience within a small or growing business.
- Experience across financial control, management accounts, budgeting, forecasting and cash flow.
- Experience building or improving finance processes, systems and controls.
- Strong commercial awareness and financial modelling skills.
- Experience using Xero or a similar cloud-based platform.
- Experience producing management, board or investor-level reporting.
- A hands-on, commercially minded approach with the ability to operate strategically.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable Experience
- Xero integration and automation.
- Engineering, manufacturing, automation or technology.
- R&D-focused businesses moving into commercial growth.
- R&D tax credits and grant funding.
- External investment preparation.
- Capital equipment or project-based businesses.
- Building or scaling a finance function.
The Company
You will be joining a business of approximately 20 employees with a strong commercial pipeline and the opportunity to have a direct influence on how the organisation operates and grows. After several years of significant R&D activity, the business is now winning increasingly valuable commercial projects, with individual projects reaching up to 2m and further opportunities already in the pipeline.
The business is targeting 2.5m turnover this year, compared with approximately 500k historically, and is currently on track to meet or exceed that target. The successful Finance Director will therefore have a genuine opportunity to build the finance infrastructure for the next phase of growth, rather than simply inherit an established function. You will have significant influence over financial systems, processes, reporting, commercial decision-making and the preparation of the business for future external investment.
What's on Offer?
- 75,000 - 95,000 basic salary, dependent on experience
- 4-day working week (32 hours per week)
- Senior leadership position
- Opportunity to build and develop the finance function
- Significant influence over financial systems and processes
- Opportunity to work within an innovative engineering sector
- Genuine opportunity to influence the company's future growth
