Health & Safety and Facilities Officer
Location: Digbeth, Birmingham, with travel between local properties
Pay: £13.50 per hour PAYE or £17.40 per hour Umbrella
Contract: Temporary for an initial 2 - 3 months, with potential for extension
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm
Working arrangement: Fully site-based
DBS: Current Enhanced DBS essential
Driving: Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle essential
The Role
We are recruiting for a Health & Safety and Facilities Officer to provide temporary sickness cover for an established homelessness charity and supported housing provider.
Working across a portfolio of corporate offices and residential properties, you will support the delivery of effective health and safety, property compliance and facilities-management services. You will conduct inspections and checks, maintain accurate compliance records and help ensure that identified actions are completed.
This is a varied, hands‑on role requiring travel between properties. There is no homeworking or out‑of‑hours requirement.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake health and safety audits, inspections and monitoring across corporate and residential properties.
- Complete building‑related risk assessments, including COSHH assessments.
- Carry out and accurately record statutory health and safety and fire‑safety checks.
- Monitor actions arising from audits, Fire Risk Assessments and internal inspections.
- Identify hazards, building faults and compliance concerns and escalate them appropriately.
- Maintain accurate information on health, safety and compliance‑management systems.
- Support accident and incident investigations, reporting and trend analysis.
- Assist with the development and implementation of health and safety policies, procedures and safe systems of work.
- Support hard and soft facilities‑management services across the property portfolio.
- Liaise with contractors, internal departments, tenants and external partners.
- Monitor PPE, cleaning materials and other facilities supplies.
- Provide health and safety guidance to colleagues and support staff training where required.
- Report any safeguarding concerns through the appropriate procedures.
Essential Experience
- Previous practical experience within a health and safety role.
- Experience supporting facilities management, estates or property compliance.
- Experience conducting audits, inspections and risk assessments.
- Knowledge of COSHH, fire safety and workplace health and safety requirements.
- Experience maintaining accurate compliance records and monitoring actions.
- Strong communication, organisation and problem‑solving skills.
- Confidence working independently and managing competing priorities
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and compliance or record‑management systems.
- A customer‑focused approach and the ability to communicate appropriately with vulnerable young people.
- A current Enhanced DBS.
- A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
Desirable Experience
- NEBOSH General Certificate, IOSH qualification or facilities‑management qualification.
- Experience within social housing, supported housing, charities or residential services.
- Experience working around vulnerable tenants or young people.
- Knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 principles.
- Knowledge of CDM requirements and contractor health and safety.
- Experience monitoring Fire Risk Assessment actions and statutory property checks.
This position would suit a Health and Safety Officer, H&S Coordinator, Facilities Officer, Compliance Officer, Estates Officer or Property Compliance Coordinator who is available at short notice and comfortable undertaking a varied operational role.
