I'm working with a well-established UK technology company based in Stockport that is looking for an experienced, hands-on Software Team Leader to take technical ownership of their core software and lead a small, highly skilled development team.

This role suits a senior C++ developer who still enjoys being close to the code, but also wants responsibility for technical direction, delivery, and mentoring.

The Opportunity

You’ll lead a small team of software engineers responsible for developing and maintaining PC-based software. Working closely with sales, marketing, customers, and senior management, you’ll help define specifications, design new functionality, and deliver robust, high-performance software solutions. This is a genuinely hands-on leadership role, combining technical design and development with team leadership, planning, and stakeholder engagement. There is also the opportunity for occasional UK and international travel, should this be of interest.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading and mentoring a small software development team, setting coding standards and leading by example
  • Designing and implementing new software applications and features in modern, object-oriented C++
  • Working with sales, marketing, and customers to agree specifications and translate requirements into technical solutions
  • Designing systems using UML to maximise efficiency, maintainability, and code reuse
  • Maintaining and enhancing existing software, resolving defects and technical issues
  • Planning, estimating, and overseeing project timescales and delivery

Technical Environment & Experience

Strong experience in:

  • C++ / STL development for Windows PC applications
  • Embarcadero C++ Builder (preferred) or Microsoft Visual Studio
  • Object-oriented design and modern C++ standards (C++17 or later)
  • Multithreaded and asynchronous programming environments
  • Designing clean class hierarchies and reusable software components

Knowledge or experience in any of the following would be beneficial:

  • Image capture and image processing systems
  • OpenCV (including pixel correction, lens distortion correction, and flat-fielding)
  • Industrial cameras (Basler, Teledyne Dalsa, line scan and area scan systems)
  • Pylon API, ImGui, PostgreSQL / PQXX
  • Database design and SQL
  • UML modelling tools such as Sparx Enterprise Architect
  • Software version control and issue tracking systems

What They’re Looking For

  • Degree-qualified in a relevant discipline
  • Around 10+ years' post-qualification software development experience
  • Proven hands-on C++ expertise with a strong focus on code quality and architecture
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or supervising other developers
  • Analytical, methodical approach to problem solving
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable working directly with customers and non-technical stakeholders
  • Clean driving licence and passport with no travel restrictions

Why This Role?

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior, hands-on software engineer who wants real technical ownership, influence over product direction, and the chance to lead a small team in a specialist engineering environment. You’ll be working on technically challenging, real-world systems with long-term product lifecycles and visible impact.

If you’d like a confidential discussion about the role, apply now and I’ll be in touch.
