Our local authority client in North London is seeking an experienced Environmental Health Housing Manager to join their Residential Environmental Health Team on an interim basis. This role requires office attendance 3–4 days per week, with additional travel across the borough as required. The successful candidate will manage a small reactive complaints team and work closely with fellow Environmental Health Managers and the Service Manager to deliver an effective and high-quality Private Rented Sector (PRS) service.

Responsibilities

  • Lead on regulation and enforcement activity within the PRS, overseeing inspections, investigations, case allocation, and enforcement action where necessary.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in housing and environmental health legislation, providing technical expertise on matters relating to the Housing Act 2004, Renters’ Rights Act 2025, and associated legislation.
  • Manage complex cases, prosecutions, appeals, FOIs, SARs, and support the implementation of new licensing schemes and service processes.
  • Manage and support a team of officers through supervision, performance management, joint inspections, and regular 1-to-1 meetings.
  • Contribute to policy and procedure development, maintain accurate public-facing information, produce reports and performance data through specialist IT systems, and deputise for the Service Manager when required.

Qualifications

  • Hold a recognised Environmental Health qualification together with the Housing Health and Safety Rating System qualification.
  • Substantial experience within private sector housing enforcement and team management.
  • Strong technical knowledge of housing legislation, experience attending court and tribunal proceedings.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, and a proactive, solution-focused management style.

This contract is initially offered for 3 months, with a strong likelihood of extension, and offers a daily rate of £440 per day.
