As QuidelOrtho continues to grow, we are seeking to appoint a Scientist I to join our Troubleshooting department in Pencoed on an 18-month fixed-term contract basis.
About QuidelOrtho, Pencoed: QuidelOrtho has been manufacturing products in South Wales for over 40 years. Our state‑of‑the‑art manufacturing facility, based in Pencoed, employs over 600 people who are involved in the manufacture and supply of clinical laboratory and immunohematology products to sites across the globe. Our Pencoed team manufacture a large menu of immunohematology products used in transfusion medicine; in addition to a large menu of immunoassay products encompassing a range of disease categories. All our employees are working towards one common goal, to help save and improve lives through diagnostics.
Your New Role: Reporting to the Team Lead (OTIF), the Scientist I role provides the opportunity to understand and develop skills in all aspects of the Product Support technical roles as part of an OTIF troubleshooting team. The successful candidate will receive training in our investigation processes and gain an understanding of the nature of the work that the Tech Support OTIF Team are tasked with. We would also welcome new ideas, based on previous experience, to enable the team to be more effective and efficient. This role will work on a day’s basis Monday to Friday, with some weekend days’ work required which will be on a rotation basis between the team (Currently one Saturday out of every four – days only).
Individuals will perform interpretation and analysis of scientific data and on occasion may take the opportunity to present data to an audience. They will ensure that investigations and projects are conducted in accordance with all relevant quality, compliance and safety systems and all quality documentation practices are followed. As a Scientist I, you will work on short-term projects and on occasion as part of a cross-functional team. These projects will revolve around reactive investigations, where you will work closely with Operations and Quality functions, and may get exposure to R&D on occasion. The role requires the ability to work well in a team and as an individual contributor. The successful candidate will work independently to organise and plan their work but will also work closely with peers and Team Leads. This is a great opportunity to apply your Product/Process knowledge and further develop skills in teamwork, communication and working to fixed timelines.
What You’ll Be Doing: Day‑to‑day involvement with technical projects/investigations, which will focus on non‑conformances, but will also provide exposure to root cause investigations or projects which are necessary to support uninterrupted production in Operations. Responsible for all day‑to‑day ownership activities, including owning actions in cross‑functional meetings, quality documentation such as non‑conformances and investigation reports, where necessary conducting scientific lab operations. Performing the interpretation, analysis, and documentation of scientific data. Providing conclusions and recommendations to the business, based on data extracted from the investigation and documenting according to QuidelOrtho record‑keeping practices. Specialising in manufacturing processes such as wells, conjugate concentrates, buffers and in‑house reference and selling material, will enable you to develop your knowledge further. Complying to all GLP, GDP and EHS standards. Contributing to and coordinating continuous improvement of processes that operate within the group to provide consistently high levels of customer service. Conducting the implementation of improvements as directed and remain open‑minded to innovative concepts and ideas. This role will work in a lab environment 5‑10% of the time only.
What You’ll Need to Succeed: Degree educated in relevant Scientific discipline, or relevant experience. Experienced in performing laboratory work and use of a range of statistical (Minitab or equivalent) tools during investigations. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Positive can‑do attitude with demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments, take on stretch assignments and work effectively in cross‑functional teams. Computer literate, good laboratory practical skills, can record experimental work accurately and at a minimum perform data manipulation and analysis. Understanding of the principles of immunoassay. Demonstrates effective teamwork, collaboration across functions and situational adaptability. Can respond rapidly to change and maintain output in a dynamic and changing environment whilst meeting project timelines. Demonstrates commitment to achieving agreed goals and a sense of urgency to get the job done when appropriate. Ability to plan own time and work effectively, can reshape plans accordingly.
