Technical Estimator – Data Centres & Process Engineering

Description

To provide technical and commercial estimating support across a broad range of engineered heating, cooling and process applications, with particular responsibility for supporting the continued growth of our Data Centre business.

The role will manage customer enquiries from initial receipt through to the preparation of technically compliant and commercially accurate proposals. This will involve engaging directly with customers, consultants and contractors to understand their requirements, interpreting technical specifications and drawings, identifying missing information, undertaking or coordinating engineering calculations, selecting and sizing appropriate equipment and developing suitable technical solutions.

The role will primarily cover fabricated pressure and storage vessels, including calorifiers, buffer vessels and specialist process vessels, together with heat exchangers, packaged heating and cooling systems, steam, condensate and associated mechanical equipment.

Customers and applications will span Data Centres, pharmaceutical, oil & gas, process engineering and other specialist industrial markets.

Following receipt of an order, the Technical Estimator will also be responsible for preparing a clear and comprehensive handover to Engineering, Design, Project Management, Procurement and Production.

Person specification:

  • Strong technical aptitude with a good understanding of mechanical or process engineering principles.
  • Technically curious and interested in understanding how a customer’s complete system operates rather than simply pricing a schedule.
  • Numerate and comfortable undertaking engineering calculations.
  • Methodical and accurate when dealing with specifications, calculations and pricing.
  • Commercially aware and capable of balancing technical compliance, risk, cost and customer value.
  • Confident questioning customers to obtain the information required to develop a solution.
  • Able to interpret technical specifications, drawings, schematics and datasheets.
  • Capable of identifying technical and commercial risks.
  • Comfortable communicating with customers, consultants and engineers.
  • Able to explain technical matters clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Able to manage multiple enquiries and competing priorities simultaneously.
  • Proactive in obtaining missing information rather than relying on unsupported assumptions.
  • Resourceful and willing to seek out the right person or information where required.
  • Comfortable working autonomously and taking responsibility for progressing your own workload.
  • Collaborative and comfortable working across Sales, Engineering and Manufacturing.
  • Willing to take ownership and accountability for your work.
  • Self-aware and willing to identify areas where additional knowledge, support or development would be beneficial.
  • Computer literate and comfortable using Microsoft Word, Excel, email, internal business systems and electronic technical documentation.

Responsible for:

  • Managing technical and commercial enquiries across Data Centres, pharmaceutical, oil & gas, process engineering and other specialist markets.
  • Engaging directly with customers, consultants and contractors to establish their technical requirements, application and intended system operation.
  • Asking appropriate technical questions to identify missing information, clarify specifications and establish the design basis required to prepare an accurate quotation.
  • Reviewing specifications, schedules, datasheets, drawings, schematics and other technical documentation.
  • Identifying technical risks, ambiguities, exclusions and areas requiring further clarification before quotation.
  • Understanding the customer’s application and determining the most appropriate equipment or packaged solution.
  • Undertaking or coordinating engineering calculations required to size and select equipment, including calorifiers, buffer and storage vessels, specialist fabricated vessels, heat exchangers, packaged heating and cooling plant, pumps, valves, controls and associated equipment.
  • Interpreting operating temperatures, pressures, flow rates, heat loads and other relevant process parameters.
  • Understanding how individual components interact within the customer’s wider mechanical or process system.
  • Constructively challenging customer requirements where alternative solutions may improve performance, reliability, manufacturability, programme or value.
  • Producing accurate and commercially robust estimates covering materials, bought-out equipment, fabrication, assembly, testing, certification, documentation and other project requirements.
  • Obtaining and evaluating supplier quotations for specialist components, equipment and services.
  • Considering manufacturing complexity, programme, testing, inspection, certification and project-specific requirements when developing costs.
  • Preparing clear and professional technical and commercial proposals identifying scope, assumptions, exclusions, programme requirements and commercial terms.
  • Identifying opportunities for value engineering and alternative technical proposals where these may improve competitiveness or customer value.
  • Understanding relevant engineering standards, codes and regulatory requirements and recognising where specialist technical or compliance input is required.
  • Ensuring applicable testing, inspection, certification and documentation requirements are identified and included at enquiry stage.
  • Reviewing successful quotations and purchase orders to confirm that the order reflects the agreed technical and commercial scope.
  • Identifying and resolving discrepancies between quotations, specifications, correspondence and purchase orders before projects are released.
  • Preparing accurate order-entry information, bills of materials and supporting technical and commercial information.
  • Preparing comprehensive project handovers covering the agreed design basis, equipment selection, customer requirements, assumptions, exclusions, programme, testing and documentation requirements.
  • Providing clarification and technical support to Engineering, Design, Project Management, Procurement and Production following handover where required.
  • Working closely with the Data Centre Sales Lead and wider Sales team to qualify and prioritise opportunities.
  • Managing your own workload and priorities, taking ownership of progressing enquiries and contributing towards agreed performance measures.
  • Using the considerable technical knowledge available across the business effectively, knowing when to work through an issue independently and when to seek input from experienced colleagues.
