Oritain is the global leader in product origin verification, with locations in Auckland, Dunedin, London, Singapore and Washington D.C. We sit at the intersection of forensic science and supply chain technology, harnessing science and data to verify the genuine origin of materials across the world's most critical commodities. Our mission is to protect people and the planet by ensuring transparency and integrity in global supply chains.
As we scale our commercial ambitions, we are seeking an experienced Strategy & Market Intelligence Lead to join us on a six-month fixed-term contract, building and operationalising an AI-enabled market intelligence capability that will directly accelerate our commercial decision-making.
About the Role
This is a delivery-driven contract role with a clear mandate: design, build and hand over a scalable market intelligence function that equips Oritain's Sales, Marketing, Product and Leadership teams with validated, data-driven insight on where to compete and win. Reporting to the CMO, you will take ownership of market sizing across our initial target verticals, build an AI-enabled competitor and market monitoring capability, and produce the strategic insight that informs how Oritain evolves its position in the market. All work is project-based, structured across three phases, with defined deliverables and handover milestones.
For a commercially sharp, analytically rigorous contractor who thrives on building something from scratch and leaving it in great shape, this is a compelling engagement.
What You Will Deliver
- In the first two months, you will audit existing market intelligence assets, data sources and AI tools, and build TAM, SAM and SOM assessments for Cotton, Leather and Timber, stress-tested and ready for ELT presentation.
- You will curate an external dataset inventory structured for AI and analytics enrichment, and critique and build upon the current competitor and market monitoring framework.
- Through months three and four, you will deploy an AI-enabled ICP and account prioritisation model, stand up an advanced competitor intelligence system producing structured briefings for the commercial team, and deliver the first full market intelligence report to the ELT, including actionable commercial recommendations and an assessment of Oritain's current market position and strategic options.
- In the final phase, you will build and document intelligence workflows for internal continuity, deliver training to relevant stakeholders, produce a final strategic market intelligence report for the Board and ELT, and hand over a clean pack covering data sources, methodology, tool configurations and a recommended next-hire profile.
Scope of Work
- You will lead market sizing and opportunity assessment using proprietary data, third-party sources and AI-assisted modelling, dynamically refreshing and stress-testing TAM, SAM and SOM assumptions throughout the engagement.
- You will design and operationalise AI-assisted competitor and market monitoring that detects emerging signals, narrative shifts and competitive moves across media, analyst commentary, regulatory developments and digital channels.
- Working in close partnership with Growth and RevOps, you will curate, structure and maintain high-quality external market datasets usable by AI and analytics tools.
- You will apply AI-enabled tools and analytical judgement to identify and prioritise ICP-aligned accounts, and translate insight into clear recommendations, narratives and decision frameworks for ELT and Board consumption.
- You will also evaluate, adopt and responsibly apply AI tools including enrichment platforms, analytics tools and LLMs to accelerate research, improve insight quality and scale output, while maintaining data integrity and transparency throughout.
Skills & Experience
- You bring proven experience in market sizing, including TAM, SAM and SOM, with the ability to translate market opportunity into commercial focus areas, and demonstrated experience designing and using AI-enabled research, analytics or enrichment tools to accelerate insight generation.
- You have a strong ability to validate, contextualise and challenge AI-generated outputs using sound commercial judgement, and experience working with imperfect or incomplete data, designing assumptions transparently and defensibly.
- Your background includes competitor research, data analysis or insight generation, preferably in a B2B or complex sales environment, and you communicate complex insight clearly and compellingly to senior, non-technical audiences.
- You are proven in your ability to deliver independently within a defined timeline and scope, with minimal ramp-up time.
- Experience in sustainability-focused or regulated-market research would be an advantage, as would an MBA or relevant degree in Business, Data Analytics, Economics, Strategy or a related field.
