Our client has an exciting opportunity for a Technical Sales Engineer to join their team in Inverness. This is a fantastic opportunity for an engineer looking for a varied role that combines technical engineering, commercial awareness and customer interaction. You’ll have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects, develop engineered solutions and be involved throughout the journey from initial enquiry through to project handover.
Working closely with the Sales, Technical and Operations Teams, you’ll play an important role in ensuring projects are technically sound, commercially viable and clearly defined before moving into delivery. The role also offers the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing improvement of design, project management and documentation processes.
You’ll be responsible for equipment selection, system design, costing, preparation of technical documentation and defining project scope and interfaces between the company and the customer. A key part of the role will be ensuring a smooth transition from Sales through to Operations, preparing comprehensive handover documentation and helping to manage customer expectations throughout the pre-delivery phase.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical advice to the Sales Team on equipment selection and suitable engineering solutions
- Design technical solutions using equipment and standard installation methodologies
- Prepare high-level budgets and detailed project costings
- Produce technical drawings, P&IDs, calculations and supporting design documentation
- Define project scopes of work and clearly identify interfaces between the company and the customer
- Prepare project handover documentation, including scopes, drawings, schedules, budgets, material take-offs and supplier quotations
- Coordinate the handover of accepted quotations and project information from Sales to Operations
- Support technical clarification discussions with customers, suppliers and internal departments
- Maintain accurate records of calculations, costings and designs used on each project
- Prepare project budgets and quotations in collaboration with the Sales Team
- Obtain and evaluate competitive supplier quotations for materials and equipment
- Ensure quotations reflect project scope, commercial risk and delivery requirements
- Accurately record chargeable hours and ensure these are transferred to the relevant jobs
- Authorise approved supplier purchase orders up to £10,000
- Escalate quotations or budgets with margins below 25% for management approval
We’re looking for someone with a strong technical and problem-solving mindset, excellent attention to detail and an organised approach to engineering and project documentation. You’ll need to be comfortable understanding technical systems and engineering applications, communicating professionally with customers and colleagues, and quickly learning new products, systems and processes. Commercial awareness is also important, as you’ll be involved in budgets, quotations, supplier pricing and project risk.
Experience in the following would be advantageous:
- Aquaculture or a similar engineering environment
- Practical mechanical and/or electrical engineering
- Interpreting engineering drawings and P&IDs
- CAD or drawing software
- Preparing material take-offs, budgets and supplier quotations
Qualifications
- A Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent vocational qualification in an engineering discipline would be preferred
Technical & Commercial Skills:
